The Appeal
The Continental GT was the car that reinvented Bentley – a super GT, beloved of celebrities and high-profile sports stars and a technological tour-de-force that brought with it the world’s first commercially available W12 engine.
It was launched to much fanfare at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show and was the first Bentley to be developed entirely by VW Group, away from Rolls-Royce. It also very quickly became the fastest-selling Bentley of all-time, due in no small part to it being mass-produced in the company’s Crewe factory as opposed to being hand-built like its predecessors.
The four-wheel-drive platform was derived from that of the VW Phaeton luxury saloon, while under the bonnet the innovative 6.0-litre W12 engine came with twin turbochargers, giving it 552bhp and a top speed of 196mph – a hugely powerful GT, ideal for transcontinental blasts.
It was a massively impactful car, both due to its imposing size and also its astonishing performance, yet it was also as opulent as Bentley owners were used to. Its appeal went beyond the traditional, too, bringing Bentley ownership to a newer and more youthful customer base, helped in no small part by David and Victoria Beckham becoming among the first customers.
This example is from the middle of the original car’s production run – a 2008 GT finished in Beluga Black with rare and distinctive red leather trim.
