Description
More expensive than the 300 SL sports car and almost double the price of the contemporary top-of-the-range Cadillac, the Mercedes-Benz 300 B was one of the world's most exclusive automobiles. It is also historically significant as one of Mercedes-Benz's first all-new designs of the post-war era, debuting at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1951. The 300's arrival re-established Mercedes-Benz in the front rank of prestige car manufacturers, marking as it did a return to the marque's tradition of building high-performance luxury automobiles of the finest quality.
This rare right hand drive (1 of 7) example left the Mercedes factory in Stuttgart on November 19th, 1953. Originally finished in `Middle' Red, it was first registered to Mercedes-Benz UK and retained by them until 1965. The Mercedes has had a mere five owners from new with the previous vendor acquiring the car in 1971 before selling it in 2017. The last owner treated the Mercedes to a comprehensive body restoration in 2018, the chassis was shot blasted, and powder coated, new brake components and dampers were sourced and fitted. Other works undertaken included a newly rebuilt prop-shaft, clutch replacement, new driveshaft seals, new water pump, radiator re-cored, restored dynamo, carburettors rebuilt, electronic ignition, stainless exhaust system, new wiring loom, body work stripped to bare metal and repaired and resprayed where necessary, extensive re chroming, new hood cloth, seats and door cards recoloured and repaired, new carpets and new whitewall tyres.
The history file contains many photos and invoices detailing the restoration, the buff logbook, original service book, sales parts list and its instruction manual. This is a truly unique opportunity to acquire a very rare and important example.
