No expense spared history
The S3 Continental Flying Spur by HJ Mulliner is a special car, aluminum coach built body with only 68 ever crafted to the personal specification of each discerning buyer. Our car however sits at the very highest echelon of such cars, so gifted has her life been that one quite often recoils at the money spent on her over the years guaranteeing her condition and longevity
Supplied new to Sir Alfred McAline & Sons Ltd through the messers Jack Barclay Ltd to be painted in Valentine Standard Jewelesence with electric aerial, electric windows, parking lights to front wings, luggage straps & sundym glass front windscreen
McAlpine & Sons were a huge industrialist construction family in England who built a very large portion of the British motorways, all of us will have at some point in our lives benefited from their impact
Naturally for a family of such industrial might their cars would have been looked after superbly well and as part of a doubtless stable covered modest mileage
This is borne out in the paperwork with the first MoT certificate dated 1976 showing the car having only covered 2002 miles at the time
She continued to be used steadily with ?normal? maintenance through to 1989 when the milage had reached 39, 423 miles
At this point the care and attention unencumbered by any sort of financial consideration really took off
In 1991 she was acquired by Mr Peter Fischer who set about his usual modus operandi of restoring the car to like new mechanical condition before offering her for sale
As such her whole mechanical underpinnings were given a nut and bolt restoration including fully rebuilding the entire drive train, engine & gearbox, overhauling the power steering, brakes & suspension etc etc in November of 1991
At this point the odometer was reset with the last recorded mileage 39, 423 miles
It was then in 1993 when Mr Fischer sold her to her most recent keeper based in Hong Kong, reels of correspondence between the two at the time surrounding the deal show both men had a similar disposition to ensuring the car was perfect
Included in the sale a new air conditioning system was fitted, lambswool over rugs supplied, front seat belts fitted, sundym side glass, halogen lights to all four headlamps, & a new hazard warning light switch to meet HK regulation
The work was duly completed and she was shipped to Hong Kong on 8th June 1993
Whilst in Hong Kong she was maintained by the local Bentley dealership but if anything very specialist was needed the part in need of attention was sent back to England at great expense to be addressed by either P. J. Fischer or P & A Wood
Our Hong Kong owner used and enjoyed her regularly amasing a further 25, 660 miles by 1997 when he decided it was time for her to have a cosmetic restoration too
As such he sent her to Vantage Motorworks in Miami Florida for a bare metal respray and interior retrim as well as a planned upgrade to the A/ C system with new vents in the rear of the car as well as the front
The work however didn't stop there and she ended up undergoing another full nut and bolt restoration of both the mechanical and cosmetic parts of the car with an upgraded sound system too. $83, 463. 70 in 1997 plus shipping and customs must have been eye watering
Our proud keeper then continued to use and enjoy her with regular servicing again being carried out by the local Bentley dealers, another decade of use went & the mileage now at 53, 000 plus the original 39, 423 miles before her first restoration
Once again it was time for her to be restored, this time a specialist in New Zealand, who had restored Jaguars for the owner in the past, and she was shipped in 2008 and the process restarted again with nothing left undone and an even larger bill generated
Thereafter she came back to Honk Kong with 53, 375 on the odometer but a brand new car in essence. Use however slowed down, although annual servicing was never missed and since 2008 she has only covered a further 3000 miles
Now after a bit longer than the usual decade instead of being shipped for a restoration she has been shipped to us for sale, with UK taxes already paid
The next owner will certainly have the benefit of acquiring one of the most cared for Bentley's we've ever come across
