Description
1987 Aston Martin V8 Volante
An original Left Hand Drive Manual V8 Volante in Prince of Wales specification
Aston Workshop are delighted to bring to market this 1987 Aston Martin V8 Volante. One of only 216 V8 Volantes produced with the desirable Weber-Marelli Electronic Fuel Injection system (A vast improvement on the original Bosch mechanical fuel injection), this car has been under the ownership of a Dutch collector before arriving at Aston Workshop. The full restoration of this car is currently underway, which includes an upgrade to Prince of Wales specification.
As the basis for a fully bespoke restoration project our V8 Volante is now available for specification by its next owner; currently resplendent in Chichester Blue (which can be kept or changed to a colour of your choice), the new owner will be able to choose the interior trim, engine specification and transmission. A range of options are available, a selection of which are listed below.
Built to Your Bespoke Specification by Aston Workshop
This V8 Volante is currently under assembly at Aston Workshop; while the body has been fully resprayed in Chichester Blue (an original Aston Martin colour) the final specification will be entirely bespoke to the new owner. Our experience in delivering award-winning restorations around the world has allowed us to develop the skills and processes to meet even the most specific bespoke requests. With only 27 PoW cars built in period, each differing slightly, we can call upon our expertise and knowledge to build the ideal PoW specification V8 Volante for you.
A Range of Options for the Rebuild of the Car
Having completed countless Aston Martin projects ranging from full restorations to subtle modern upgrades, Aston Workshop can build your perfect V8 Volante to your bespoke specification. While every aspect of the car can be uniquely specified, we have provided a range of suggested options as a guide:
As an original LHD Manual car with Weber EFI, it may be desirable to keep the standard mechanical setup for the sake of originality. A thorough overhaul will ensure the car drives better than ever, and our range of modern upgrades could subtly improve the driving experience.
With PoW body modification already complete, a full conversion to Prince of Wales specification will elevate the car to be one of the finest V8 Volante restorations available. Vantage specification performance upgrades paired with Pow-style flared arches, bonnet bulge and 16-inch wheels will separate the car from the standard V8 Volante.
Widely accepted as the ultimate modern upgrade package for the Aston Martin V8, a rebuild to Aston Workshop V8 Evolution 6. 0 specification will provide exceptional levels of performance and drivability. With up to 460bhp available along with exceptional torque across the rev-range, the V8 Evolution 6. 0 special project in V8 Volante form would be a unique masterpiece. The Series 2 V8 Volante
Prince of Wales Specification
It’s no secret that King Charles III is an Aston Martin enthusiast, with his passion for the marque starting in 1970 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, gifted him a DB6 Volante. In 1986 the Emir of Bahrain offered to purchase a brand new V8 Vantage Volante as a gift for the then Prince of Wales. While the Prince was delighted to accept the gift, he preferred the more restrained look of a standard Volante and as such he commissioned Aston Martin to build a Vantage specification car without the skirts and body enhancements of a true V8 Vantage Volante.
The car was an instant hit, and customers soon started contacting Aston Martin to purchase their own “PoW’ V8 Volante. In total, 27 PoW cars were built between 1986 and 1989 of which only five were LHD. All five were exported to the USA and as such, the European market never saw a PoW V8 Volante. The Prince of Wales specification V8 Volante is considered the pinnacle of the V8 range, and is therefore one of the most desirable cars in Aston Martin’s history.
Weber-Marelli Fuel Injection
The Aston Martin V8 engine was always designed to be equipped with Fuel Injection; indeed, it launched with a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system in the DBS V8 in 1969. The early mechanical system, while capable of producing world-beating performance, was tricky to set up correctly and was swiftly replaced by a carburettor set-up utilising four twin-choke Webers. The carburettor system achieved USA emissions compliancy and was significantly more reliable, however a major reduction in power hampered the cars performance.
It wasn’t until 1985 that Fuel Injection could be made to reliably work on the Aston Martin V8 engine. A new Weber-Marelli Electronic system was adopted as a reliable, emission compliant set-up that achieved much-improved performance figures. The Aston Martin V8 engine would remain in use, with an evolved version of the Weber-Marelli efi system, for another 10 years in both the V8 and Virage models as well as the 1989 Group C AMR1 racecar.
