Description

The 308 GTB was created when Enzo Ferrari commissioned Pininfarina to built a 2-seater Berlinetta for his alloy 3 liter 8 cylinder V90 degree motor. Within months, chief designer Leonardo Fioravanti presented a most captivating visual symphony of curves from predecessor 246 Dino and straight lines from concurrent 365GT4 BB. The side intake scoops would feed air via 4 Weber carburetters into all 8 cylinders to be fired by the Marelli ignition and twin distributors. Unveiled at the Paris Auto Show in September of 1975 the GTB caused an absolute sensation as it materialized the unison of Enzo’s and Fioravanti’s inspirations. Once production begun, time and financial constraints necessitated that the first cars would be built with glass-reinforced plastic bodies. As orders rose and long term production was ensured, the GTBs would be treated with a proper steel body. By 1977 all bodies were produced in steel thereby permitting the development of the marketing-oriented open top GTS. In 1978 a new Marelli ignition with single distributor and a catalytic converter were fitted that took a toll on the engine's output. Two years later, Ferrari tried to remedy the power drop by fitting injection modules in place of the favoured Webers and soon after by adding 2 more valves per cylinder. By the end of production in 1985, 18000 cars would have been built of which only 2185 would be the original carbureted Berlinettas.
GTB chassis * 20203* offered was produced in October of 1976 and according to records is amongst the very first 15 steel-bodied Berlinettas built. It features 4 Weber carburetters, the early Marelli ignition with twin distributors system and factory-fitted 4-outlet exhaust system with no catalytic converter. Equipment includes air conditioning as well as the optional 16-inch Cromodora wheels and passenger side rear view mirror. Despite delivered new in the US, the GTB was imported back in Europe in the early 90s by a Ferrari enthusiast in Rome to thereon become part a private collection near Oldenburg. Recently resprayed in its original Bianco Polo Park and fully serviced, this very early Berlinetta presents in excellent condition throughout and stands as a testament to Enzo’s and Fioravanti’s original inspiration.
