The Mercedes-Benz 190SL was initially designed to offer a "light" version of its prestigious "big sister," the 300SL Gullwing, with a focus more suited to everyday use and therefore at a more affordable price. Despite significantly different performance (105 hp compared to the 215 hp of the 300SL), around 26, 000 units were produced. The 190SL stands out for its robust construction, ease of maintenance, and it is estimated that nearly half of the 190SLs manufactured are still in circulation today.
