Description
Few vehicles have the perfect combination of both groundbreaking engineering and refined luxury like the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. The first production SL’s actually differed little from the famous 300 SLR racing cars that defined Mercedes-Benz’s performance image in the 1950s. Many will agree that the 300 SL Gullwing is the most famous icon of Mercedes-Benz, but the 300 SL Roadster was an extremely important car for the German brand at the time and defined basically the SL Roadster class. Although the 300 SL Gullwing was impressive in performance, the Gullwings were considered cramped, with high sills that made getting in and out a challenge. It also became quite warm in the cabin. The 300 SL roadster solved these problems and as the years passed, the SL line became more and more extensive, more luxurious, while always maintaining a certain appearance. Just a class of its own. The Pagode is a lovely example of that.
Our example is the third generation of the SL-Class, also referred to as R107. Mercedes introduced this SL in 1971, and it became one of Mercedes-Benz’s longest running production series. A marvel of modern motoring, the new SL was available with luxuries such as climate control, cruise control and wonderfully smooth engines. We think that they all drive well, but the eight-cylinder engines are really lovely.
We have a very nice R107 in Brummen. It is beautiful in the colour Colorado Beige combined with Dattel Brown leather interior. A very nice and excellently preserved R107. This model is equipped with European headlights and bumpers.
Do you know why Mercedes used the ribbed tail lights? The intention of Mercedes was that people could see the tail lights at any time, no matter what the weather conditions were. This structure allowed the lights to be visible under any weather circumstance.
The entire car has the factory original appearance and has only driven 62, 000 miles. The car also presents itself as low mileage. The whole car looks very well cared for and in good condition. The interesting thing about this SL is that it is equipped from the factory with climate control and a beautiful Becker Europa radio, which is still present in the car.
The body panels fit nicely, and the body paint is of good quality. The bumpers, windows and rims are very neat, giving a good representation of the low mileage. In the interior, we find neat carpets and a nice dashboard with clocks in good working order.
The 4, 5-litre engine is a great engine, and this example is no exception. It starts smoothly and runs very quietly. At the time, the SL was tuned for smoothness, quiet running and more than enough torque, and this example succeeds with flying colours. The very robust four-speed automatic transmission does its job well, and driving this SL is as Mercedes intended.
