Description
Classic Car Design offers you this Porsche 911 2. 4 TE Targa from 1972, the famous and sought-after "oil trap" version. It comes in its original Sepia Brown colour. The Porsche certificate of authenticity confirms this colour but also, more rarely, the matching brown upholstery.
The car was purchased in 2015 from Historic Motors LLC in Ohio by its current owner, who has embarked on a full restoration that will be completed in 2023. A thick file of invoices accompanies the car.
On the outside, the car has been restored from the bare body. There are no dents or scratches on the bodywork. Overall, the paintwork has been well applied, is taut and shiny. However, there are a few minor defects, particularly on the front wings. There are also a few traces of paint on the joints following touch-ups after the car was reassembled. The fit and finish are average for these 911 Classic models. A little less attention has been paid to the paintwork on the doorways and under the front and rear bonnets. Most of the chrome, wheel trims and protective rings are original, in good condition and showing signs of normal wear and tear. The headlights and lights are new. The targa cloth is also new. The Fuchs rims are in good condition. The rear wheels are wider than original for a sportier look. Structurally, the underside, floor and wheel arches are in very good condition. The floor is the original one, and shows virtually no deformation from use, which is rare.
Inside, you'll immediately notice the original steering wheel, in good condition, in front of the emblematic five VDO meters, and the sports seats. The overall appearance of the interior is good. Most of the upholstery is original, including the dashboard, door panels, storage compartments and rear shelves. They therefore show signs of normal wear and tear. The beautiful carpet is new, although the fit is sometimes uneven. The owner couldn't find any new brown upholstery, so he had the standard components stained black. The result is a patinated look that is perfectly suited to the vehicle's style. The old car radio works. Apart from this element and a few details such as the meter rings and rear wheels, the car is in its original configuration.
Mechanically, 911 TEs are fitted with fuel injection from the outset, and are often converted to carburettors for European configuration. This is the case with this one, which is fitted with two Weber 40 IDA 3C carburettors. The old odometer showed around 56, 000 miles before the restoration. The famous flat 6 starts well and revs well. The carburettors were recently adjusted. Fitted with a complete stainless steel line, including the intercoolers, it makes a very nice noise. It's very supple and picks up nicely without jerking. It's the right type 911/ 51 and its number is well between 6120001 and 6129000, the numbers allocated to the 72 TE. The gears shift well, and the suspension and brakes are as good as new. There's no noise or vibration when driving. The car is really very pleasant to drive, it doesn't look its age thanks to the restoration. This Targa offers the driving experience you'd expect from a 911classic. The most recent technical inspection revealed only a slight imbalance in the rear brakes, certainly due to the fact that the car has not been driven very much, but this is nonetheless imperceptible when driving.
Overall, this Porsche 911 2. 4 TE looks good. What makes it attractive is undoubtedly its relatively rare configuration. It doesn't claim to be a concours car, but it does allow you to drive without any ulterior motives.
