PRINCIPAL FACTS:
A year 2000 SL600 with just over 55, 000 miles on the odometer finished in Tanzanite Blue metallic with an exclusive Java leather interior. Mercedes-Benz’s flagship roadster, the SL600 squeezed a smooth 6. 0-litre V12 under the R129’s bonnet adding even more power and prestige. The SL600 was, and remains, a real stealth sleeper, which is a huge part of its appeal. They were crushingly expensive when new, being a six-figure car nearly a quarter of a century ago, which means they were rare cars. That, allied to the smooth, abundantly powerful V12 (with 394hp and 570Nm of torque), makes these SL600 very cool cars, and increasingly appreciated as collectable modern classics.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
Flagship cars dictate the wealthiest of owners, and typically that means the sort of money-no-object care and attention that results in cars in near perfect condition. And so it proves here, indeed this car absolutely flew through the SLSHOP Assured Inspection, with nothing flagging as necessary. Indeed, even the tyres are under three-years old, which is unusual in a car that’s only used occasionally. We said near perfect though, so being hyper critical, there’s a little bit of marking to the paint around the front which highlights the car being used, but it’s so slight it’s more like a car that’s covered a tenth of the mileage of this SL600.
Inside it’s more of the same, the interior feels as substantial as it should, with no wear and tear evident, with our only note being a deep clean would remove some of the ingrained use that’s evident on the driver’s seat and seatbelt. The blue fabric hood is in fine condition, and this car comes with its glass panoramic hardtop, too.
HISTORY FILE:
Digging through the history file underlines that the first owner collected the car from the factory – our hope being they enjoyed it on a grand European adventure after that. There’s the original order form, data card and more in there, too. The paperwork accompanying the car also has details of its recent maintenance, and plenty tax discs and MOTs as well as a couple of previous sales adverts that all highlight the mileage is correct, and the price has steadily been creeping up.
SLSHOP SUMMARY:
Any SL is a cool car, but there’s something wonderfully indulgent about the SL600, and this car underlines that. We like its sleeper status, these are quick, capable cars, but aren’t showy or flash like so many of its contemporaries. A V12 is always an appealing engine, and the one under the bonnet of the SL600 is genuinely one of the greats. As the market continues to appreciate the R129 these rare flagship cars become ever more sought after, which makes these an astute purchase for someone wanting a modern collectable that’s both useable and enjoyable.
