Description
History of the Mercedes Benz 220 SE Cabriolet
Economic miracle 1956 ... Germany has been football world champion for 2 years. A spirit of optimism everywhere. For the equivalent of a detached house, the well-heeled potential buyer could purchase a piece of jewellery from Daimler, hand-built in Sindelfingen. This cabriolet was not intended for everyday use, but rather for those who could once again afford a "holiday on every journey" - after all the years of privation. Terms such as luxury, exclusivity and beauty were redefined with this cabriolet. Only the finest materials were used, the richest upholstery, covered in thick, fragrant leather, carpets of the finest quality and walnut veneered wood was used in abundance, even framing the windscreen. And chrome, heavy chrome everywhere. It sparkles on the mouldings, on the buttons, which sprout like mushrooms here, on everything the occupant touches for the purpose of operation. And every detail is customised, because a lot of manual work went into the special Mercedes bodies. Care and perfection were the top priority.
This cabriolet drives smoothly and unobtrusively, the driver is enthroned behind the high steering wheel and enjoys a marvellous view. Turning the signal ring activates the indicator, a witty detail. The eye is drawn to a modern tape speedometer, with the good star further forward and almost at eye level. The steering wheel gearstick in the style of the new era - it hitches, nothing to tear through. But that would be out of place in this elite car anyway.
The engine of the top-of-the-range 220 SE version with an overhead camshaft offers sufficient temperament (160 top speed, zero to 100 in 15 seconds) and allows brisk travelling. In the 1950s, it was enough to blow away almost everything that crawled and flew on the motorways. At its core, this car favoured an elegant driving style, gliding along, enjoying the comfort. It is not the acceleration that counts, but the appearance. A total of 1974 examples of this exquisite cabriolet were produced.
History of the Mercedes Benz 220 SE Cabriolet -SSC584 offered here
This Mercedes 220 SE Ponton Cabriolet was built by Mercedes in 1959 and delivered and sold directly to the USA via a Mercedes Benz branch in Germany. In the early 1990s, this Mercedes was re-imported to Germany by the previous owner and extensively restored in Germany. In 2010, this convertible was then registered by the last owner, refined and sensibly supplemented with electric power steering. In the course of its restoration, the vehicle was repainted in the current colour. The leather and carpets are in very good condition, as is the soft top. A hint of patina is naturally recognisable after all these years. The engine starts immediately, the gearbox, which was overhauled during the restoration, shifts excellently and the brakes and steering are in very good condition. There are no signs of rust on the bodywork or underbody, the restorer has obviously done a very good job. Since 2010, this Mercedes Benz has been serviced exclusively in the classic department of a very renowned Mercedes Benz dealership.
Summary
This Mercedes Ponton Cabriolet in its top version with mechanical fuel injection is a cruiser model for gliding along at a brisk pace. The extremely robust and durable engine hardly causes any worries if it has been serviced regularly, as is the case with this vehicle. The supply of spare parts from Mercedes and the many parts suppliers is exemplary. A very elegant cabriolet that perfectly reflects the spirit of optimism in Germany in the 1950s and is still a reliable companion for extended holiday trips today.
