Description
For sale is a remarkable 1955 Dennis fire engine, previously operated by the Leicestershire & Rutland Fire Service in Loughborough and Hinckley. After retiring in the late 1960s and being stored at a coach works in Coston, near Melton Mowbray, it was discovered and purchased for preservation in 1984.
The vehicle underwent a comprehensive restoration over two years, including a full body refurbishment, repaint, new roof, and a complete rebuild of the fire escape. The engine was also overhauled to ensure peak performance.
This fire engine is powered by a robust Rolls Royce 6. 5L straight-eight petrol engine from the B80 series, known for its distinctive side exhaust valves. Although it delivers a modest 5-8 MPG at a top speed of 40 MPH, it offers a distinctive and enjoyable driving experience.
The engine carries 100 gallons of water and features a Dennis No. 2 centrifugal pump capable of delivering 450-500 gallons per minute through its two delivery hoses. The pump and fire escape remain fully operational. The John Morris (AJAX) wheeled escape ladder extends to 50 feet and weighs approximately three-quarters of a ton.
The coachwork by Dennis Bros of Guildford is finished in its original maroon and red colors, unique to the Leicestershire & Rutland brigade. This vehicle can be driven on a standard car license and costs around £120 annually to insure. While it lacks power steering and has a four-speed crash gearbox, it provides a truly authentic driving experience. It is also MoT exempt.
Included with the sale are the current V5 and a full set of original accessories: ladders, hoses, search lights, brass nozzles, filters, axes, torches, saws, breathing apparatus, crank handle, blue lights, bells, and sirens— all still in working order!
Believed to be one of only four surviving models of this type, this historic and characterful vehicle, affectionately known as 'Eleanor,' is perfect for show or as a striking private vehicle. Its museum-quality condition makes it a popular choice for period TV and film work.
Approaching her 60th birthday, this vintage gem is offered at a reasonable price and is sure to be a standout addition to any collection.
