Description

Originally sold on October 13th 1963 by Truman Motors in El Cajon, California, to Lawrence E. Finnin, this vehicle has a story as captivating as its classic design. Finnin ordered the car as standard even optioned without a radio but with a discerning eye for detail, insisted on adding the striking chrome wheels at the dealership prior to delivery, a subtle enhancement that complemented the car’s already iconic look.

This 356B remained in Finnin’s possession for 45 years until 2008, during which time it became an extraordinary time capsule.

In 1968, with just five years of driving under its belt, the car was parked in Finnin’s backyard after the engine was taken out to fix a minor oil leak, a task that astonishingly was never completed. For the next 40 years, this Porsche 356 sat undisturbed in his garage, a hidden gem awaiting rediscovery.

That discovery came when leading Porsche specialist Skip Shirley of San Diego unearthed the car, literally cutting down a tree to free it from its long hibernation. What he found was a perfectly preserved specimen of Porsche engineering, untouched by time, with all its original panels, including matching stamped hood, trunk, and doors. This car had never been in an accident and remained completely rust free, a very rare and valuable find.

Shirley undertook an exacting restoration, staying true to the car’s originality at every turn. Not a single reproduction part was used; all components were either original to the car, genuine Porsche, or new old stock. The car was freshly repainted in its original Oslo Blue, a hue that highlights its flawless panel fit and even gaps, which is vital to obtain when duplicating the exact build quality of these cars from when they were new. The wonderfully contrasting red interior is pristine and totally authentic, and the engine compartment is beautifully finished with all correct factory finishes and details.

The original engine and transmission were rebuilt, with the engine upgraded internally to 'Super Spec' so taking it from 60 BHP to 75 BHP. This subtle modification gives the car a bit more power while maintaining its standard appearance, adding an extra layer of driving pleasure to an already exceptional vehicle.

The results of this painstaking restoration are nothing short of spectacular. This Porsche 356B has been a star on the concours circuit in the States, scoring an incredible 298. 1 out of 300 points at the 56th Porsche Parade in 2011 organised by the Porsche Club of America (PCA), where it won the prestigious Gmund Achievement Award—the highest score of any car in the competition. It followed up this success with a clean sweep at the 57th Porsche Parade in 2012, taking First in Class, First in Division, and First in Overall Restoration.
Additional accolades include Best of Show and People’s Choice awards at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

Today, this Porsche 356 B is presented in true concours condition, showing virtually no signs of wear. It comes complete with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, perfectly matching drivetrain, original service book and the original owner’s manual signed by Hans Peter Porsche.
Since its restoration, only 528 miles have been added to the odometer. In 2013 upon arrival at Canepa, the car was fully sorted mechanically, aligned, and corner-weighted to ensure it drives as beautifully as it looks. Larger Pirelli P6 radial tires have replaced the belted show tires, making this 356 B as roadworthy as it is show ready. It was then sold on the 27th of September 2013 to a UK collector where it has remained unused but fully maintained in a hugely desirable collection

Upon acquiring this spectacular 356 we sent it straight down to our friends and world-renowned Marque Specialist Maxted-Page Limited who carried out a full recommission service, set up, check over and road test, ensuring the car is as good, if not better than the day it left the factory.

This 1963 Porsche 356B is not just a car; it’s a journey back in time, waiting for its next owner to continue the adventure that began over 60 years ago. Whether you’re a collector or an enthusiast, this immaculate Porsche offers a rare opportunity to own a truly special piece of automotive history.
