Introduced as long ago as 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Geländewagen (cross-country vehicle) was the result of a joint venture with Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria, a firm with considerable experience in developing four-wheel-drive systems for off-road vehicles. Its purposeful appearance fundamentally unchanged throughout its life and engineering excellence has secured the G-Wagen cult status and earned it a reputation as one of the most coveted of classic 4x4s.
Taking its cue from the rival Land Rover, the early G-Wagen was not luxurious by any means, featuring manually wound windows and fabric upholstery, but soon established a reputation for being able to traverse the most challenging terrain. This capability was emphatically demonstrated in 1983 when a 280 GE crewed by Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur won what is arguably the toughest off-road event in the world: the Paris-Dakar Rally.
There have been countless updates to the Type 463 G-Class since then and a host of special and limited-edition variants released. One of these was the Professional, which was first offered as a five-door long-wheelbase station wagon before the body variants were expanded. As its name suggests, the Professional was intended for use as a practical workaday vehicle rather than a luxurious boulevard cruiser. To that end, cloth seats replaced leather; the COMAND infotainment system gave way to a simple radio; the windows were wound up manually; and the uncarpeted floors were washable and equipped with drainage outlets. A matt black front grille and 16 black-painted wheels further emphasised the Professional's no-frills persona. It is estimated that only approximately 1, 000 examples of the G Professional were produced.
The G350 d Professional was powered by a 3. 0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine production 241bhp and a mighty 443lb/ ft of torque, which was transmitted to the road via a seven-speed automatic transmission boasting permanent all-wheel drive and three locking differentials. Built only between 2016 and 2018, G350 d Professional is one of the rarer members of the G-Wagen family.
