Description
History of the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint
The Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint - a name that evokes pure emotion among lovers of classic Gran Turismo vehicles. This elegant coupé, which was built from 1962 to 1966, represents the last breath of an era in which Alfa Romeo lived out its engineering skills at the highest level. Before the takeover by Fiat, the Italians succeeded in putting a masterpiece on the road with the 2600 Sprint - powerful, stylish and well thought out down to the smallest detail.
Anyone looking at the design of the 2600 Sprint will immediately recognize the signature of a master. None other than Giorgetto Giugiaro, then still in the service of Bertone, designed the unmistakable lines of the large coupé. The proportions are almost perfect - long, flat and with a clear, timeless design that still makes the Sprint a design classic today. These lines are a prime example of Giugiaro's early work, which exudes pure elegance in its simplicity. The Sprint shows that Italian design is more than just a cliché - it is an art form.
But the true heart of the 2600 Sprint lies under the hood. A 2. 6-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, which was one of the last developments from Alfa Romeo in this design. With 145 hp and three Solex twin carburetors, the Sprint was bursting with sporting ambition. This was impressive by the standards of the time, but the real magic of this engine unfolds on the road. The power delivery is velvety, the sound is a sonorous growl that turns into an aggressive roar at higher revs - a concert that burns itself deep into the memory of every car enthusiast.
The Sprint is aimed at drivers who not only want to be fast, but also stylish. With a top speed of 200 km/ h, the car played in the premier league of Gran Turismos at the time. The steering is precise, the handling is sporty and at the same time comfortable enough to cover longer distances with ease - typical Gran Turismo. You don't just drive here, you enjoy it.
In the interior, the driver can expect an ambience that was pure luxury for the time. The finest leather upholstery, wooden applications and a cockpit that impresses with its simple yet functional elegance. It is a pleasure to sit here, whether you are driving along the Via Aurelia along the Italian coast or over the Alpine passes towards Switzerland. The 2600 Sprint combines comfort and sportiness in a way that is typical of this era, yet has lost none of its fascination.
With only 6, 999 examples built, the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint remains a rare sight on the roads - and yet one that lingers in the memory. It is an automobile for connoisseurs, for those who see in a classic not just a classic car, but a piece of automotive history. Anyone who is lucky enough to drive one of these elegant six-cylinder coupés knows that they are not just driving a car - they are experiencing a piece of timeless Italian engineering.
Vita of the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Coupé -SSC599 offered here
This Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint was completed at Alfa Romeo on 18. 09. 1964 and only sold to Rome on 22. 09. 1965. According to the Italian Foglio complementare, a copy of which is available to us, this Alfa was registered by Mr. G. Pierantozzi with the registration number Roma 876929. The purchase price at the time was a respectable Lire 3, 375, 000.
It was not until 1994 that the 2600 changed hands and was sold to Arezzo in Italy. In 2012, Scuderia Sportiva Colonia discovered this vehicle and imported it to Germany. In the same year, this coupé was sold on to an important art historian and collector of classic cars. He commissioned the Alfa Classic Center in Dortmund to carry out a restoration and upgrade in a class of its own, involving an investment of well over €100, 000 in the period from 2015 to 2019:
- Repainting in the original delivery color silver gray metallic
- Overhaul of the chassis and brake system
- Renewal of the leather interior, red carpet with leather applications around the gearshift unit
- Revision of the existing instruments and electrics
- Production of a special wheel set with unique chrome-plated and wider 16” steel rims
- Complete engine overhaul with new 3-barrel Weber twin carburetors and power increase to over 160 hp
- Gearbox overhaul
- Installation of a new EZ power steering system
After completion, this Sprint was transferred to the extraordinary collection in Monaco and has been driven a maximum of 5, 000 km since then. The condition of this classic is therefore absolutely unique to this day, comparable to a handkerchief-maintained annual car.
