Description
1935 Chrysler Airstream (KEW) . RHD shipped from USA and put together in the UK. In the history file there are Two lovely documents One being the original Buff log book. Showing UK car and also an original letter from UK Chrysler dealers in Bristol Street Birmingham thanking the original Uk purchaser for the business . Wow what a lovely document to have !!Alot of these popular “American” cars were also then shipped onto New Zealand being RHD from new. This also avoided taxes due as were shipped in parts form to be re assembled. The cars assembled at Chrysler’s Mortlake Road, Kew, facilities were essentially British versions of American cars. Hence the name ! Chrysler gave its UK cars the names of Surrey towns to make them more palatable to UK buyers, so, there was the Chrysler ‘Kew’ (2. 8 Litres) and ‘Wimbledon’ (3. 3 Litres), as well as the DeSoto ‘Richmond’ and ‘Kingston’. The U. K. cars tended to be fitted with smaller six-cylinder engines that were more appropriate to the British market than the V8 engines that were popular in the U. S. It also meant that they were cheaper to buy and run.
Our 1935 version soon to celebrate its 90th birthday runs superb. Quiet considering its age. Drives very well out on the country lanes. Ours has the optional side mount spare , leaving the back looking super smooth and sleek. There is a wind out safari front windscreen. When this car was restored many years ago the original sliding roof mechanism was all completely rebuilt and took a long time . Worth the effort though as it works perfectly and all the healing etc was replaces at the same time . The rear foldable luggage rack is an original item and also works well. Just ready for that large picnic basket or period luggage. This car was sold by a specialist dealer 13 years ago to the previous owner who has sadly passed . The receipt shows £14000 was paid at that time. It’s as good today as it was then. Previous owner was a classic enthusiast who maintained everything very well. The Two tone Burgundy and Black paintwork is in excellent shape. We have found an original canvas picture of our car from 13 years ago and it’s every bit as clean today as it was then. Together with its original UK documentation shows fantastic history.
