Description
This machine is all road ready and there is no work required the ride immediately. The tyres are just about on the tread levels and will require changing in the next few thousands miles.
By way of an introduction to this Triumph TR6, it is a single carburetor Triumph T120 Bonneville. All the power without the hassle of balanced carburetors! This is the last year the pre unit was made and was made with the new “Duplex” Frame. 1962 was the last year that the Pre-Unit engine was manufactured.
Much work has been completed over the last two and a half decades to keep it in excellent road and safety condition. Some professional Engineering specialists and less crucial work by myself. The engine has been reconditioned top to bottom, the transition from engine to rear drive has been reconditioned allot original spec. The engine cog however has been replaced with a slightly bigger gear which gives a better cruising comfort. Receipt are saved for work and dates completed. The petrol tank was repaired and re coated in the early 80’s by a professional body work specialist.
I want to be perfectly honest in this description in so far as I cannot confirm nor deny that this machine has matching engine / frame numbers. Prior to my purchase of the machine in 1997, I was advises by the renowned Classic M/ C dealer that the crank case , for some reason, had been changed and replaced with a 1957 Thunderbird case (exactly the same moulding as the TR6), and hence the number on this reflected the host engine number. When researching the ignition timing for the TR6 I found this was totally different to the setting for the Thunderbird casting number , it also had a wheel mark on which does not relate to the TR6 engine. So any one in future can research timings with the correct original engine number. I was also advised thar the crank and cams were original. Categorically this has never caused me any problems at all. My personal believe is that this combination alone does not make for a better machine, just more expensive. This is a motorcycle for reliable riding and not bought as a pure investment. Market values prevail.
As mentioned at the top this is a riders bike and a reliable well ridden machine. For me, it is a very reluctant sale and I have been riding this bike very regularly for over 25 years continuously, month in month out throughout the year. I have taken this machine around 500 miles to the Lakes each year, excluding 2021. Never missed a beat! This machine is a Classic among Classics. It was produced in the last year of the Pre Unit manufacturing and much sought after. The Duplex frame hold good to cope with the engine toque produced. As mentioned earlier the single carb is most beneficial as apposed to the twin carbs. Much easier to tune and maintain. The difference in BHP is negligible. The power to weight ratio is remarkable for the age of bike far more tjanI have ever used!
To the bike! While this machine has a magneto ignition I have converted the electrical and lighting system from 6 volt to a 12 volt purely for better lighting on dark country nights rides. The bike has been pampered since the 1997 when I purchased it with 4, 762 miles on the clock. I have completed a further 6, 500 miles. The Chronometric Speedo was refurbished in May 2019 and Zero’d now showing 1, 100 miles. The Bike has been given everything it needs to keep it in first class working condition. Many thousands of pounds have been spent on this over the years, more recently new clutch, top end major renovation. Other major work includes full engine and transmission rebuilds. I have receipts for most of the work completed. While it is Road Tax and MOT exempt I have the detailed records of MOT’s up to the last few years.
It is a totally garage kept machine and mainly used in dry weather journeys. It has never been raced or rev’d. While it is potentially a 120 MPH machine I travel mainly at no more than 60 MPH or much less!
Front tyre, Avon Speedmaster, tread 3/ 3. 5 mm. Rear tyre Avon Mark 11, 2. 5/ 3.
