Description
1964 VW Split Screen Double Cab Pickup
LHD, Double Cab VW Split Screen Pickup, 1776cc Engine
A rare example of a classic VW double cab split screen pickup.
I purchased the vehicle in 2011 and commenced a meticulous, bare metal, full body rotisserie restoration over a six-year period with all body works completed in British Columbia, Canada. The vehicle is presented in period Light Grey paintwork, re-trimmed grey interior, with all original features and all mechanical parts are either new or rebuilt.
Imported to the UK from Canada in 2018 and completion of the restoration of the gearbox and hand-crafted new hoops.
As part of the restoration the brakes have all new brake cylinders, brake pipes, shoes and master cylinder. New white wall tires on correct 14inch rims. Front and rear bench seats restored with new padding and new stock grey seat covers, new door cards, new headlining, original sun visors, new rubber mat in front and original rubber mat in rear.
The gearbox was rebuilt in the UK in 2023 by John Walklett and included a higher 4th gear ratio for better cruising speed, new clutch and short shifter.
The engine was totally rebuilt to 1776cc and machined for full flow oil, spin on oil filter. Running twin carbs. The electrics were converted to 12v and include a new full wiring harness. Suspension all rebuilt including kingpins.
The paintwork was completed by a reputable spray shop however there are a few areas of micro blistering. This we now know was caused due to moisture in the airline at the time of painting and surfaced almost a year later after being containerised for shipping. The areas have remained stable and no further issues detected. The micro blistering is not obvious unless shown. This double cab was imported new to Vancouver, Canada direct from Germany and came to rest in a field around 1991 where it stood for approx 20 years before I rescued it. This 60 year old truck is now as good as new and ready for another 60 years.
