Description
A hypercar with the glamour of the Legend For more than four years, the experts from Mercedes Benz and its partner company McLaren, manufacturer of formula 1 models, have been building the Mercedes SLR McLaren, which was then offered for sale in 2004 in 1, 757 units. The Mercedes SLR McLaren hypercar is described by the Stuttgart-based company as the successor model to the Mercedes 300 SLR, the legendary racing car of the 1950s.
The chassis is made of carbon (only the front side members are aluminium), which guarantees a high degree of torsional rigidity for safety. The engine is a supercharged 5. 4-litre AMG V8 block producing 626 hp and no less than 780 NM of torque at just 3, 000 rpm, with 0 to 100 performance in 3. 8 seconds and a top speed of 333 km/ h.
Beneath the robes, the SLR McLaren hides other specificities such as the aluminium wishbone suspension and electronic gearbox management that provides three response times in manual operation and, above all, the flat underbody that ensures optimum downforce as a function of speed. Aerodynamics with ground effect. Its 'linearity' is favoured by both the positioning of the engine behind the front axle and the exhausts placed to the side. They emerge from the car just behind the front wheel arches and, contrary to what you might think, are not a stylistic quirk inspired by the SLRs of the 1950s. Instead, they are a solution imposed by the need to help 'clean up' the underbody. Obviously, the mobile rear wing also contributes to the aerodynamics. Depending on speed, it determines the 'load' on the rear axle and, during violent braking, it positions itself almost vertically to act as a stabilising 'airbrake'. The variable-assist steering is precise and sharp, almost capable of shortening the car's long wheelbase, giving the SLR exceptional directionality. The optimal weight distribution contributes to the quickness in direction changes, with 49 per cent on the front axle and 51 per cent at the rear. Moving inside the Mercedes-Benz SLR, one can immediately notice the truly impressive finish of the details and the extensive use of alcantara and leather that cover the entire interior. In the centre of the car is a low, wide dashboard that houses the Mercedes-Benz infotainment system and a series of levers and buttons that manage all the supercar's information, including the climate control system, and a drawer with the SLR logo in evidence. From the gearbox, climate control, handbrake and radio, everything goes through the centre console. Even the ignition control for the mighty engine is located in the centre of the tunnel, next to the love brake and the automatic gear lever. Behind the carbon and leather-blend steering wheel are the gearstick paddles, and immediately behind it an analogue tachometer displays all the information needed by the driver of this Mercedes-Benz SLR, including various temperatures. The two seats are of a strongly racing imprint, cosy and enveloping, capable of holding the occupants firmly in place even when racing on the track. Closing the Mercedes-Benz SLR's interior is the 180-litre boot. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was among the most acclaimed super sports cars of the early 2000s, an instant classic for the most discerning collectors, sure to be revalued.
