Description
This is an exceptionally well-preserved Sovereign with an interesting back story. As a journalist I attended the XJ40's launch at Dunkeld, Scotland in 1986 and then went to the 30th anniversary event at the same venue in 2016 - after which I was so enthused with XJ40s again that I looked for the best 4. 0 litre I could find. K262 KOD is it, a RHD import from Japan where the dry climate is kind to cars so, critically, there is no corrosion whatsoever. I am the first UK owner (discounting the London importer who sold the car to me in 2016) and I believe the car had one owner in Japan.
I then immediately had XJ40 specialist David Marks Garages professionally rustproof the body, fit all new door seals (essential for refinement) and also fit Bilstein dampers which invisibly update the handling yet preserve the car's famously supply ride. This is one of the best-driving XJ40s you will ever find.
As for condition, the paint is largely original although after some 32 years it is not concours-perfect. Absolutely no blisters or pitting however. Brightwork is excellent. Likewise the interior is beautifully preserved with original carpets and headlining, with only minor creasing of the driver's seat indicating the age. Rear seats are like new. The wood veneer is excellent with just slight cracks in a small area on the centre console below the J-gate. Mechanically excellent with MoT until Feb 2025. Recent new tyres. Comes with a set of factory lambswool carpets which have never been out of their plastic bag, original Jaguar factory literature including British and Japanese driver's handbooks, some Japanese service history (plus my own), original Jaguar first aid box and even a Jaguar umbrella plastic bag! Recent new tyres. As for the mileage, I am quoting it as miles but believe it could be kpm.
I am selling K262 LUB only due to lack of space (too many cars), and if you want an XJ40 of this type and in this very genuine condition, I think you will be delighted. It is priced to sell at what I believe is considerably less than is being asked for other XJ40s in similar (or indeed lesser) condition and without K262's interesting little link with XJ40 history. As it must go, sensible offers will be considered.
