Excellence on road and rally – Mercedes 190 SL
The story begins in the early 1950s, when Mercedes-Benz decided to develop a roadster that would reflect the luxury and performance of the 300SL, but at a more accessible price point. Under the leadership of engineer Karl Wilfert and designer Walter Häcker, the 190SL was born.
After the introduction of the 300SL, an American Mercedes importer noted that while many were interested, the 300SL proved too expensive for the average consumer seeking a weekend car. After consulting with headquarters in Germany, swift action was taken. Later that same year, the 190SL, based on the Ponton, was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 1954. Additionally, the 190SL offered a comfortable ride thanks to its independent front suspension and robust rear axle.
Meanwhile, at the Cool Classic Club, we are quite familiar with the 190SL. This particular model dates back to 1963 and boasts a remarkable history. Carefully restored by the top Mercedes specialist in the Netherlands. True to Mercedes tradition, all invoices are meticulously documented. It features matching numbers and is fully prepared for many beautiful drives and admiring glances!
