This is truly unique! Trabant is the distinctive brand name of a series of models from the former East German car factory VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerk Zwickau in Zwickau. It's a particularly special name in our opinion; the name was chosen in 1957 after a competition, as the car was initially only sold under its type designation. The name is quite fitting: on one hand, it means 'companion' or 'mate'; many people considered their Trabant as part of their family. On the other hand, the name refers to Erdtrabant, meaning satellite. The car was intended to showcase that the DDR (German Democratic Republic) was keeping up with the technological progress that saw the first satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

The Trabant 1. 1 is the very last model of the Trabant series, produced by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau, later Sachsenring Automobilwerke GmbH from 1990 onwards. After a cost explosion during preparations for the new engine, little money remained for updating the model. The body of a prototype that was initially preferred was rejected. Instead, modernized technology was concealed under the slightly modified appearance of the Trabant 601: the Trabant 1. 1 received a new steel hood, a new grille, plastic bumpers, new rear lights, and a fuel filler cap on the right rear. Not immediately visible are the reinforced front for accommodating the relatively heavy engine and the disc brakes.

In 1995, 444 Trabant 1. 1 Universal cars were offered as the so-called "Last Edition," originally destined for Turkey but stranded in the customs port of Mersin due to the importer's bankruptcy, never reaching their final destination. This sale was also unsuccessful, and ultimately, the last Trabant of this series was handed over to Udo Lindenberg, who used it for promoting his musical "Hinterm Horizont."

As you might already sense, the beautiful Trabant we offer is one of the 444 transported to Turkey. Hence, it has only 6, 000 original kilometers on it. All 444 Trabants spent a considerable time there, and in 2013, this magnificent specimen found its way to the Netherlands. For this reason, you'll understand that both the interior, exterior, and body are in mint condition. Since 2013, the car has been stored in a warm environment within a collection. Vulnerable parts have been treated with protective measures against aging. In short, it has been maintained in optimal condition by people who understand it well. We are very excited about this; it's a piece of history that we have standing in our showroom. Additionally, we must acknowledge how remarkably well it drives, a world of difference compared to the previous engine. And of course, it's charming in its design, the white exterior combined with the leather-look brown upholstery. Unique in its kind.

We hope you can feel our enthusiasm. Are you getting as excited as we are? We invite you to visit us in Katwijk to experience this Trabant in person; the coffee is ready!
