Description

Boris is an eye-catching example of the beloved air-cooled classic, benefitting from a programme of significant restoration work. Boris was brought as a project but then my children fell in love with him.

In the rear engine compartment sits a rebuilt twin Weber carburettor-fed 2. 0-litre air-cooled flat-four, sending power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The engine was rebuilt by the previous owner.

I purchased Boris as a project seven years ago. I carried out the restoration work as I do it for a living. The restoration has included body refurbishment and a subsequent respray, an engine rebuild, an interior retrim, new electrics, a new pop top, a new ‘rock and roll’ bed, and various new trims and ancillary parts.
The engine has covered just around 2, 500 miles since being rebuilt and Boris is regularly serviced by myself with the most recent engine oil and oil filter change in March 2024.
The odometer shows 138, 202 miles.

Boris is finished in red with a white upper half, roof and bumpers; complemented by a matching spare wheel cover and colour-coordinated extendable camping pop top.
The red and white theme continues inside, with the custom-painted dashboard, steering wheel and gear lever, and a bespoke leather retrim. The main colour scheme is punctuated by grey laminate flooring, made-to-measure red, grey and white plaid blackout curtains, and chrome accents.
It rides on 14-inch white steel wheels with chrome domed hubcaps, fitted with Trocmoh tyres.

When I bought Boris in 2017 it was a part-finished project and had already been fitted with new floor panels, brakes and brake lines, and a freshly rebuilt engine. During my ownership, I have fitted twin Weber carburettors, a new clutch, carried out a transmission oil change, fitted a new fuel tank, new window and door seals, new door handles and locks, a new pop-top roof canvas kit including gas struts and hinges, new front seat belts and two three-point rear harnesses in the back.

An auto electrician fitted a Just Kampers wiring loom, leisure battery, split charger, and mains hook-up.
Boris is accompanied by its V5C UK registration document, a collection of old MOT certificates and supporting invoices, and the original Solex carburettors.

Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.

All the windows apart from the windscreen are original, with the registration etched into them; the sliding door for some reason only locks from the inside, but does operate fine.
Boris does have a radio, it is not connected up and doesn’t have any speakers fitted, though the radio could be easily connect by the next owner.

The engine has covered just 2, 500 miles since being rebuilt.
Boris is accompanied by a collection of old MOT test certificates and some supporting invoices from previous owners.

Boris is an eye-catching and well-finished example of the characterful yet versatile icon. It benefits from significant recent expenditure and investment of time, with the programme of restoration work including bodywork and a subsequent respray, an engine rebuild, an interior retrim, new electrics, a new pop-top, and a ‘rock and roll’ bed. Boris is a charming ready-made classic to enjoy on holidays, weekend adventures, and at air-cooled gatherings. Boris is eye catching and just fun all round to own. Be prepared to get lots of waves and have lots of photos taken as he draws a lot of attention. He loves attending an air-cool show and is all ready for his next adventure. Boris has taken us on many days out and family holidays and has created us memories to last a life time.
