Description
Just 199 units of the Ducati 916 S were produced globally in 1994 (factory confirmation email in to validate the data in Ian Faloon's book). This is one of them. It’s a very rare bike and I have only ever seen a couple for sale in the UK. Not to be confused with the Strada, SP, SPS or SP3.
I bought this a few years ago from auction with the aim of undertaking a light recommission before using it for gently weekend jaunts. It’s been on display in my house since I bought it and I have had the panels off for a light detail and have also removed the cam covers, clutch cover and few other bits just to ensure all is in order.
It's not concours and has not been subject to a nut and bolt restoration but in my opinion would make an ideal candidate for a concours standard restoration. It is however almost entirely original from what I can see save for a few items like the brake/ clutch fluid reservoir caps.
Since purchase, I have been bitten by the track bug and want to spend my spare time riding my bikes not polishing them or keepnig them locked away in the house. As this one is far to special to send down the road, it is now looking for a new custodian to go towards my track bike van fund.
It was made in 1994 and as an early Varese-era bike, it has all the customary elephant logos as you would expect. It also has age appropriate 1994 year Fren Tubo brake lines and some very special original period carbon including airbox, undertray, air intake tubes, hugger, fender and so on. Further tell-tale signs of period correctness include, blue air pressure sensor and various other date stamps certifying originality eg fairings, pegs. The airbox and intake tubes have "Ducati" stamped on them in relief and a part no. Hard to take a photo of. The undertray has a part number etched into it.
As per original specification, there is an Ohlins rear shock and two sets of exhausts (standard and carbon Termignonis) and corresponding chips. Present is the original P8 ECU and original toolkit and book pack. The chainstay became brittle and broke when I removed it (pieces retained) and will need replacing.
The wheels are rare period correct magnesium Marchesini wheels. These were available as an option at the point of purchase. Included in the sale, is the original speedometer calibrated in kilometres and replaced at circa 17, 000km (c. 10, 500 miles). The current odometer reading of the replacement speedometer is c. 2, 900 miles, indicating that it has covered c. 13, 400 miles from new.
Frame No: ZDM916S 00XXXX
Engine No: ZDM916W400XXXX
During my ownership I have replaced the fuel filter and o-ring seal with genuine Ducati items .
My light recommission plan would be to change the belts, change all fluids, replace the tyres and to have the wheels checked over by TPCS before getting them newly painted. For good measure, I would service the rear shock and front forks too. Fork seals are good and no leaking. I would be happy to undertake some of this work for the new custodian subject to discussion.
To save your time and mine, I am more than happy to proceedable buyers who have funds ready to buy. If you need to sell something or a vital organ, please do so before enquiring to view.
With Christmas looming I am happy to consider any reasonable offers until then. There is supporting invoice paperwork, parts invoices and MOT certificates up until 2018 and a stamped service booklet and various other bits of paperwork including magazine articles, original period marketing content etc
