MG SA Coupe: Owned 60 years/ Over £40k Spent
The MG SA is a sporting saloon that was produced between 1936 to 1939. Launched as the 2-litre, the car was originally planned as an advanced sports performance saloon to rival the likes of SS Cars (later Jaguar) and Bentley.
After the merger with Morris in 1935 the project was passed to the Morris design team and production commenced in 1936. The saloons were manufactured at Abingdon and the coupes were bodied by coachbuilders Salmons at Newport Pagnell. The car was well received by the motoring press but production was suspended with the outbreak of WW2.
Milestone Classics were delighted when we were approached to assist with the sale of this remarkable pre-war MG SA Coupe that has been owned by the vendor's father since 1964.
In recent years the car has benefitted from considerable expenditure with a full engine rebuild, attention to mechanical components, new hood, interior plus attention to the body and paintwork. Expenditure for this work is in excess of £40k.
The SA starts and drives but has not been used on the road for around ten years so will need recommissioning and is being sold as a restoration project.
The tuned Morris QPHG straight-six engine with twin SU carburettors runs nicely and is mated to a four-speed gearbox delivering bags of torque and sounds lovely.
The history folder includes the original Chassis Guarantee from MG (dated 25th August 1939 so a very late car), Purchase Invoice from 1964 when Mr Constantine purchased his SA for the princely sum of £80, buff logbook, maintenance records since 1939, invoices from restoration (up to 2010), old MOT’s etc.
The SA Coupe styling is absolutely stunning – we love the twin-mounted spare wheels, huge headlamps & three position hood – and the car has genuine presence on the road. The grey paintwork works well with the black hood/ grey interior and all the chrome presents very nicely.
MG SA’s rarely come to market, often simply passing to another club member or close associate. This is a remarkable opportunity to purchase an example where all of the heavy expenditure has already been incurred by the last owner.
We have priced this car to sell and are looking forward to finding her a new custodian.
