Description
Up for sale my early (Feb 1987) 3. 6 XJ40 in Bordeaux Red.
With just 94878 miles on the clock it has years of life left in it.
5 former keepers. It comes with volumes of service history meticulously put together by one of the former keepers. Including the original pre delivery inspection certificate.
It has been kept in a garage by previous owners and it shows.
I have been using this as my daily driver for the last 7 months and have loved every minute of it.
I have done around 10k miles in it and it hasn’t let me down once.
New job means I now have to drive into Bristol more often so have bought something a bit more economical.
The car is in really good condition, mechanically it is spot on. All consumables, brakes, tyres etc are new.
Since owning it I have spent around £2500 on the car having the following work done.
Front wheel bearings stripped and adjusted.
Front wishbone stripped, top bushes and ball joints replaced.
Rear brakes stripped, callipers replaced, pads replaced.
Rear shocks and bushes replaced.
Rear wheel bearings replaced
Oil change done 2000 miles ago.
XJR wheels purchased, dipped and stripped, professionally resprayed gold. These look amazing in the sunlight, with a slight shimmer to them. They perfectly match the gold pinstripe along the car.
4 brand new Pirelli tyres, with only about 1000 miles on them.
Wheel alignment carried out.
Professional paint correction done recently so there aren’t even any swirl marks in the paint. Followed by a ceramic coating, so paint is protected and water beads, makes cleaning much easier. This really doesn’t look like 40 year old paint. The pictures show the quality of the work done.
Bad points.
Being 100% honest, I will list everything wrong with the car, remembering this is a 38 year old classic so isn’t showroom condition,
There are a couple of small rust bubbles coming up, i have pictured these. One on the rear window corner and also on the front arches.
The oil pressure sender is starting to intermittently play up. I asked for this to be changed when it was last in the garage but the work wasn’t carried out as they couldn’t see the fault so didn’t feel it needed doing. Frustrating as it’s intermittent so they probably wouldn’t. It’s a £30 part that needs replacing so not a huge problem.
The interior is in really good condition, apart from a couple of small sections of veneer that have come away, the drivers arm rest has a few cracks and the centre console arm rest has a spilt. This is only a £25 for a replacement though.
There is a small oil leak, which my mechanic says isn’t bad enough to worry about!? There is no oil under the car when left parked. But you do occasionally get a slight smell of burning oil when the car is hot. It doesn’t affect the level of oil either.
Short MOT, but as a lot of the work on the last mot has been done, it should be plain sailing. But you never know with old motors!!
The rear brake sensor has failed so you get a brake fail warning on the dash every so often. This can be fixed with a new sensor cable. I did buy one but it was the wrong connection on it, so it couldn’t be fitted when having the brakes serviced.
I have tried to be as honest as possible here.
I don’t think you will find another XJ40 in as good condition as this one.
