Description

This Phantom I is one of the 1 240 US RR cars built in the US Rolls Royce factory in Springfield, MA.

The RR US Springfield factory procuded Phantoms from 1926 to 1931. Only thr chassis and mechanical parts were produced by RR. The body was made and fitted by a coachbuilder who produced bodies selected by the owner.

More specifically it is one of the 15 RR coachworked by Murphy (The Walter M. Murphy Company).

Body style is Convertible Sedan Murphy, which led afterwards to Brewster Newmarket type. Brewster and Co being owned by RR after 1926.

- Engine number : 21 857Walter M. Murphy was a manufacturer of custom bodies for top quality car chassis which operated in Colorado Street, Pasadena, California. Founded in 1922 its business ended in 1932.

He is a coachbuilder primarily remembered today for his magnificent creations on the Duesenberg chassis.

Murphy is known to have built on many makes like Bentley, Bugatti, Buick, Cadillac, Cord, Duesenberg, Hispano-Suiza, Hudson, Isotta- Fraschini, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Mercer, Minerva, Packard, Pierce-Arrow and Rolls-Royce among others.

During the 1920s, Murphy-bodied automobiles could be found in the garages of Movie Stars like Buster Keaton, Gary Cooper, Lola Montez, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolph Valentino,...; Film Directors: Hal Roach, Howard Hughes; Millionaires; Publishers like William Randolph Hearst; and the Royal families of Europe: King Alfonso of Spain and King Carol II, of Romania.

The Rolls Royce Phantom I Sedan by Murphy here presented has a perfectly clear history, with only eight owners all identified and Schoellkopf cards and RROC Directory Registration.
