History The Series 2 Elise, announced on 9 October 2000, was a redesigned Series 1 using a slightly modified version of the Series 1 chassis to meet new regulations, and the same K Series engine with an all-new Lotus-developed ECU. The body design paid homage to the earlier M250 concept and was the first Lotus to be designed on a computer. The Series 2 Elise and Opel Speedster/ Vauxhall VX220 were built on the same production line at a new factory in Hethel. The two cars shared many parts, including the chassis, although they had different powertrains: the basic S2 models were powered by a naturally-aspirated 1, 795cc Rover K-series engine developing 120bhp. The Series 2 was also available as a 111S model, with Rover's VVC technology engine producing 160 bhp.
