MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
Drawing inspiration from the DB4 Zagato, the first generation Vanquish was launched as the new Aston Martin flagship model at the 2001 Geneva Motor show.
The Vanquish used a bonded aluminium composite chassis with carbon fibre developed with Lotus, and a sophisticated independent suspension set up. Power was courtesy of a development of the 5, 935cc V12 engine first seen in the DB7, now producing 466 PS (343 kW; 460 hp) at 6, 500 rpm and 400 lb?ft (542 Nm) of torque. This paired with an automated manual transmission provided the Vanquish with impressive performance figures: a top speed of 190mph and a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds. This performance, matched with superb driving dynamics made the V12 Vanquish the ultimate grand tourer, and a serious alternative to comparable Ferraris of the time.
The Vanquish is significant as it represented both the beginning and end of an era; it was the last all new model to still be assembled by hand at Newport Pagnell, but at the same time it was technically the most advanced car ever produced by Aston Martin, and formed the underpinnings for future models in the subsequent years.
Its appearance in the 2002 James Bond film ?Die Another Day? earned it third place in the list of best film cars ever, finishing only behind the ?Italian Job? minis and Aston Martin?s own DB5 from ?Goldfinger?. Then in 2020, the Vanquish, along with the DB4 Zagato was recognised by Autocar as one of the ten most beautiful cars of all time.
In 2004, the V12 Vanquish S was launched with subtle styling additions, and power increased to 527 PS (388 kW; 520 hp) which when paired with stiffer suspension, revised steering, larger brakes, and F1-inspired paddle shift transmission, provided breathtaking performance and a top speed in excess of 200mph.
The V12 Vanquish was ultimately replaced by the introduction of the DBS in 2007.
