Description
Baines Racing are a respected UK based Ducati tuning specialist who have been based at the Silverstone racing circuit since 1991. Originally founded by brothers John and Geoff Baines, they have devoted their career to high performance two wheeled machines. Aside from modifying and servicing motorcycles, Baines built their own retro-classic Ducati special appropriately named Project Imola throughout the 1990s
This striking motorcycle has clear styling links to the original and iconic Ducati 750SS Desmo ?Green frame? racer that won the 1972 200 Miles Imola race in the highly skilled hands of the late motorcycle racer Paul Smart. There is no doubt that this win cemented Ducati?s position in the annals of motorcycle racing history and the subsequent low production road going ?Green frame? 750SS constructed by the factory to celebrate the victory were an instant classic when launched and remain highly revered by collectors across the globe today
Baines Racing had the idea to put a belt-drive engine in a lightweight frame similar to that used on the Ducati 900 Supersport, but with improved mechanical reliability. Their machine emulated the style and nimble feel of the bevel drives while combining the performance and relative simplicity of a modern belt drive motorcycle, clothed with sensational bodywork and colours influenced by the aforementioned Paul Smart racer
Believed to be fewer than forty examples of the Baines specials ever constructed, buyers were offered a choice of a completed bike built by Baines at their workshops or offered in kit form to international purchasers to be lovingly and meticulously constructed by the customer themselves. This particular example was supplied in kit form to its original owner in Holland who built the machine around a very low mileage 900SS frame and engine which had been blue printed
Our bike boasts a one-off custom alloy fuel tank as opposed to the more common square plastic covered fuel tank typically supplied by Baines. Finished in the Imola colour scheme of ?Sea Foam Green? and silver, this bike offers exceptional looks and performance at this price point
Our bike has formed part of a private collection since 2016 and is in exceptional condition with the odometer reading 20, 939 Km, equating to 13010 miles. Interested parties should note the bike will require light re-commissioning prior to use
To summise this machine is a rare and desirable hand-built special that combines classic 1970?s Ducati styling with 1990?s reliability and usability for a very reasonable price tag
