The Sport Light (SL) model of 107 series is regarded as the epitome of Mercedes-Benz’s sophisticated open air motoring. Its 18 year-long production run alongside a range of celebrity owners from Madonna & Elvis to Michael Schumacher established it as an automotive icon of a cultural era. Its various versions were generally categorized in the sportier and lighter 6-cylinder engine models and the heavier 8-cylinder engine cruising models. The former category incorporated Mercedes-Benz’s long heritage of in-line 6-cylinder engineering while the latter addressed the torque demands of the US market. The most developed 6-cylinder version was introduced in September of 1985 as the '300 SL' and featured a 3. 0 lt engine of 177 bhp output, catalytic technology, revised front suspension, new uniform front spoiler and larger yet smoother 15 inch alloy wheels. In 1986 the 300 SL was further equipped with Bosch’s electro-mechanical KE Jetronic sytem providing for ultimate control of idle speed, fuel rate and fuel/ air mixture. By the end of the 107 series manufacturing in 1989, the 300 SL represented just 5% of the production rendering it nowdays a most sought after version.
The 300 SL offered was produced in October of 1986 under special factory order in arguably the most attractive 107 color combination: Impala Brown Metallic exterior over Beige leather interior and Dark Brown soft top. Destined for the European market, it benefits from small elegant front and rear bumpers as well as square headlights. It is equipped by the factory with a series of options including a 4-speed automatic gearbox, 2 heated front seats, 2 rear seats, electric windows, ABS, electrically adjustable passenger mirror as well as a cabin-mounted windbreaker and ashtray deletion. Treated as a future classic from new, this 300 SL has received an impeccable series of factory scheduled maintenance providing for a condition awarded with a Classic Data Valuation Certificate.
