Description
The Mercedes-Benz SL is a highly popular model, produced by Mercedes since 1954. The SL stands for ‘Super Leicht’ (Super Light) and is one of Mercedes’ longest-running models. Not surprising, considering the model offers a very attractive package of sportiness, the customary Mercedes feeling, combined with the ability to drive with the top down.
In the 1950s, American importer Max Hoffman told Mercedes-Benz that there might be a market for a more refined version of a Grand Prix car. Mercedes listened, and ultimately Hoffman was proven right. To this day, for example, the SL remains a very important model for the German brand in the United States.
The Mercedes SL, built between 1989 and 2002, is also referred to as the R129 and replaced the outdated R107. The R129 was produced as a two-door, two-seater roadster with an automated roof. The model was available in several variants, including the 500 SL. Just over 200, 000 units rolled off the production line. This Mercedes was technologically advanced for its time, featuring electronically controlled suspension damping, a hydraulic roof mechanism, and electrically adjustable seats and windows, amongst other things. Additionally, this type was the first convertible to offer automatic roll bar deployment as a safety feature.
Our example is not a regular SL but a Designo edition. Designo is an exclusive customisation program by Mercedes-Benz. With this program, customers can customise their vehicles regarding paintwork colour, materials, and finishes, both for the exterior and interior. This program offers a wide range of high-quality paint colours, luxury leather upholstery options, and premium materials, allowing customers, through this program, to give their cars a personalised and unique appearance. Designo options are often available for certain models and are often associated with additional costs due to their exclusivity and customisation.
With only about 19, 000 original miles, this example is literally just broken in, and it shows in every aspect! This car comes with complete documentation, including all (service) booklets. The car is in very good and well-maintained condition. We also find an extensive list of options including a Bose sound system, adjustable seats with memory function, and xenon lighting.
The exterior is truly in a very good condition. A very neat appearance, down to even the smallest detail. For example, the door sills are still in excellent condition. With nice fits and a very beautiful color that not only is free of significant damage but also has a wonderfully deep lustre. In addition, the doors close as you would expect from a Mercedes-Benz of this caliber. Given the age of the car, the interior is virtually in immaculate condition. The same also applies to the engine compartment and the underside of the car. With this example, you are both comfortable and sporty on the road. The automatic transmission provides a comfortable feeling. You can easily drive to South France; it’s nothing for a car of this level. The eight-cylinder engine, of course, runs silky smooth, as you would expect from this German product and corresponding mileage, but of course, has quite a bit of power available. This also allows for sporty performance. The chassis has no trouble with handling this either.
A delightful car, this 500 SL. With low mileage and the Designo edition, we offer a top-quality product from Mercedes-Benz that is truly remarkable.
