Description
This majestic streamlined vessel glides silently on the asphalt, swaying gently thanks to its supple suspensions.
Beneath its endless hood, the discreet murmur of the powerful inline 6-cylinder engine is barely audible in the cozy cabin. Everything exudes finesse in this luxury sedan, whose lines already foreshadowed the future XJ6 launched in 1968. Succeeding the imposing MK 9, the MK X was intended to rise to the top of the range above the MK2 3. 8 liters, which were focused on sportiness.
Its main objective was the American market where the Coventry brand had enjoyed great success since the launch of the Jaguar XK120. Faced with the growing popularity of the Jaguar E-Type in the United States, the feline brand had so many demands that it had refused to lend a car for the TV series "The Saint" with Roger Moore.
For this reason, this high-end sedan had inherited the independent rear suspension from the Jaguar E-Type and above all its most powerful engine version (Straight Port), with three carburetors producing 265 SAE hp. This power was more than enough to propel this majestic vessel weighing nearly two tons in running order to almost 200 km/ h. In 1961, such a speed was quite extraordinary for this type of vehicle.
Not only did it rival a Bentley in terms of luxury, notably with its lavishly trimmed interior of leather and precious wood, but it also offered superior dynamic qualities, with a very efficient Dunlop braking system with four discs, good independent suspensions, and exceptional performance. Furthermore, it was offered at a price half that of a Bentley. Well, almost, at nearly 40, 000 francs of the time with the optional automatic gearbox, as on this version.
