Summary

ELA 830J...

Here we have a very special and well documented Suffix A Range Rover, built August 1970 and the 3rd vehicle off the production line.

August 1970 she was sent to Wadham Stringer near Portsmouth for its conversion to a rapid response medical vehicle, shortly afterward it was returned to Rover where it was registered under the ownership of the Ministry of Technology on 6th October 1970.

ELA was eventually dispatched to the Government Sales Department on 7th February 1971 and then on to the Ministry of Aviation on 5th April 1971 and transferred to the medical facility at RAF Boscombe Down, near Salsbury.

The very comprehensive history file is simply outstanding containing a folder full of period images including active service at Farnborough Air Show believed to be in 1970, two folders full of documented extensive historical research by Dr Lamb including many letters written tracing its history, replies from those letters even retaining the dated return envelopes, past registration documents, previously unseen VHS video footage of Charles Spencer 'Spen' King the designer of Range Rover driving this actual vehicle and sharing his recollections about the inception of the legendary Range Rover, plus a folder full of receipts and invoices for work carried out by Dr Lamb restoring ELA to a roadworthy standard.

Early 2015 saw noted Famous Four Classic, Louth, Lincolnshire acquired ELA 830J from Dr. Lamb and immediately began a comprehensive ground up restoration to bring it back to its 1970 specification. Works included removing the body from the chassis; the chassis shot blasted and powder coated; the bodywork professionally restored; the running gear fully overhauled and refitted and completed with a full interior refit. Meticulously restored without compromise ELA was then kept as part of their own collection.

This is an unrepeatable opportunity to own possibly one of the best Suffix A Range Rovers in the country.

Along with brilliant parts availability, owners club support and mechanical simplicity offer worry free classic car motoring allowing the new owner to concentrate solely on enjoyment. Viewing is highly recommended in our indoor showroom.

A full 12 month MOT will be completed upon sale. ELA 830J is HPi clear with certificate included.

More Details

ELA 830J was the third vehicle to leave the production line in Solihull, and was supplied directly to the Ministry of Technology along with two other Range Rovers, chassis numbered 53 and 54, which were consecutively registered as ELA 831J and ELA 832J. The former was painted in Sahara Dust and the two latter were Masai Red. All three vehicles are extremely important in the history of the Range Rover development.

ELA 830J subsequently became the first ever Range Rover to be evaluated as an ambulance, was displayed as such at Farnborough airshow in 1970, and served for many years with the MoD at RAF Boscombe Down, having been lightly modified by Wadham Stringer to accommodate a single personnel stretcher.
