The History.
1949 MGTC GCY45 1250cc Cassis no. TC9322, Engine No. XPAG 10020, Colour Coventry Cream.
This report dates back to 20th August 1949, at MG Dealers CK Andrews Ltd. Uplands Garage, Uplands, Swansea, when this vehicle was purchased.
This information being based on the 1950 Swansea Trade Directory, listing Nuffield Distributors.
A buyer whose name I have been unable to discover purchased & registered it at that date. Dealership records from that time having been lost along with Swansea DVLA Records before Computerisation...
The last Log Book Entry being a change of ownership on 31. 7. 1995 to a Mr Alan Reed of Fareham P014 3LE
GCY45 had a number of 3 owners over its lifetime & was taken off the road probably due to rust, body rot & poor mechanical condition, presumably in the late 1990's.
However fate took a hand & some enterprising enthusiast purchased the rusty remains from the last owner & proceeded to restore. Starting with Engine Block, New Pistons, Bearings, Reground Crank, Valves & Springs, New wooden body shell and much more.
This is not the original engine being one made some two weeks before the one fitted in the TC in 1949.
I suspect the engine has been bored out by perhaps 40 thou and is now around 1290 cc., but have not had the head of to date to check.
Moving on to 2012 with the reconditioned engine, new body shell, plus al other rusty worn parts being displayed for sale by Astal Holder at Silverstone MG Car Club Event.
As fate would have it Chris Leverette of Leverette Classic MG’s Bristol A well known MG Specialist of over forty years & a long term member of the Bristol MG Owners Club was visiting the event & decided to purchase the generally complete remains & convey them back to his Bristol Workshop, with the thought that He could probably have it back on the road within six months.
Six years on & many long hours of work has achieved the total reconstruction of GCY 45 back to showroom condition.
This includes striping & Powder Coating Chassis & Wheels, New Body Shell, VW Steering Box, Refurbished Wings & Bonnet, New Doors & Running Boards, Radiator, Fuel Tank, Wiring Loom, Five new Tyres, reconditioned Dynamo, Starter Motor, Braking System, Shock Absorbers, suspension & running gear plus new instruments, seats, carpets & hood, along with new Chrome work. Not to forget a polished alloy period Rocker Cover, Spotlight & horn unit.
Fast forward to December 2018, already being a long term MG enthusiast & owner of a Concours winning MGC Roadster, I fell in love with the completed classic lines of GCY45 At first glance and after a suitable amount of haggling we agreed a purchase price to include a new Full Tonneau Cover as it only had a rear one. I felt it a necessity to protect the new leather interior from the occasional hot sun.
A first short run verified that The Crown Wheel & Pinion was suffering from serious noises & backlash. Having researched the purchase of a new replacement via Pete at the Octagon Club he suggested I contact Roger Furneaux , quite a character, who resides in a picturesque back of beyond valley in Dartmoor & is regarded as the best Axle specialist in the South West, On the 09. 08. 2019 I elected to purchase a higher 4. 66 ratio unit for lower cruising engine revs,
The result and driving when cruising and for GT Rallying is a very comfortable and pleasing drive from the MG, Now rolls along silently with no backlash, which also seems to further smooth Gear Changing.
Next i had Chris Leverett fit an MGB Brake Servo Unit, This addition has resulted in much more positive stopping power.
Other Works carried out includes Electronic Ignition, Water Gauge, Seven Blade Plastic Radiator Fan, & Glass Petrol Filter Unit, S Luggage Rack. & additional small Negative Earth 12V Battery, This drives modern gadgets such as phones etc.
Recent Wax oil carried out to the underside Body Chassis & Running Gear.
A superb example that is worth taking the time to view if you are in the market for an MG - TC.
