Description

The 308 GT4 represents a huge number of firsts for the legendary Ferrari brand - It was the first production Ferrari to feature a ‘rear mid engined’ V8 (That would become the businesses norm), the first Ferrari with Bertone designed bodywork giving it the unique angular wedge design often seen by cars designed by the legendary Gandini (Lancia Stratos, Lamborghini Urraco), is the only 2+2 Ferrari ever raced with Factory support, and was the first Ferrari with the legendary ‘Dino’ V8 that would last all the way until 2004 in the fabulous Ferrari 360.

This particular car can only be described as a 308 GT4 turned up to 11 after receiving a complete restoration of the body, chassis and engine as well as a number of tasteful upgrades to further accentuate the platform - I believe this to be one of the best examples in the UK, in both terms of condition and driveability (This is echo’d by others, as the car recently won ‘Best Non-Alfa’ at the 2024 Scottish Italian Car Day and was recently reviewed by ‘JayEmm on Cars’ and described as ‘as much fun as a new Ferrari F8 on the roads!) - Ready for a new home after 20 years with a committed and enthusiastic owner, this vehicle really does present a unique opportunity to purchase one of the best sorted and usable classic Ferrari’s in the UK.

Exterior

The exterior and bodywork of the vehicle is in exceptional condition - There is no damage to note, with the exception of one small stone chip to the front bumper, and one to the door. The red paintwork has been well cared for and is bright, with no signs of age or fading. All trim pieces and badges are present and correct, in excellent condition. The vehicle sits on a set of Image Wheels that were custom made for this vehicle, in a period correct design reminiscent of those on the Lancia Stratos but with offsets and sizes suited to the 308. Underneath the car is as clean as on top, with all components in good condition and showing no signs of age or corrosion. Glass is all in unmarked condition, with no chips or scratches.

Interior

It is said that Enzo Ferrari himself had a lot of input into the interior of the 308GT4, even having a mock up of the interior made for him to personally test different steering, pedal and cockpit positioning. This shows when you step inside - Cockpit is indeed the correct word, as the dash and switchgear wrap around and focus on the driver. The interior is complete and in good condition, with a smooth dash top, all dials original and working as intended, and some small touches to improve the drivability including a period correct MOMO steering wheel, and an extension to the gear lever to make it more accessible (This can easily be removed depending on your own seating position and build). Overall there are no tears or damage, and altogether the interior is a fantastic place to be.

Mechanical

In case the above has not yet impressed, this is the section where the car really shines - Throughout the 20 years of ownership, this vehicle has always received whatever is needed to keep it in exceptional mechanical order, beginning with large mechanical overhaul and rebuild at 65k Miles, (42k miles ago) where everything was addressed and where possible improved. To drive, the vehicle is extremely responsive and ‘tight’ - It is as close to the feeling of driving a ‘new’ classic as I could possibly imagine. There really has been no compromise whatsoever throughout this cars life.

Throughout and since the rebuild of the vehicle, a number of enhancements have taken place to allow the purest of drives from the car, these include but are not limited to:
- Hi-Comp Pistons
- Rebore to 82mm
- Reground and balanced Crank
- Black Stallion Electronic Ignition
- Upgraded Clutch & Pressure Plate
- Thrust bearing and holder (Hill Engineering)
- Wilwood 4 pot front calipers
- Goodridge Brake Hoses
- Rose Jointed Gaz adjustable Shock Absorbers
- Thicker rear Anti Roll Bar

While we try and take the time to describe the car as thoroughly as possible, as always with a classic car there are quirks that cannot reasonably uncovered by us here - Although, it’s these quirks that make us fall in love with classic cars! Please do consider this when purchasing a classic vehicle.
