Description
2002 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG
Overview:
A low mileage and low owner car, presented in near perfect condition inside and out with excellent maintenance history and 12 months advisory free MOT. Having covered only 38, 635 miles, with one owner from new until last year making just two total keepers in 22 years. The colour combination really sold me the car, the very rare Topaz Blue with Grey Alpaca leather really is stunning in the flesh. It’s not only scarce but a welcome change to the typical Silver & Black paint finishes.
Usual dealer facilities offered such as: Finance, trailered delivery, part exchange and 3month to 2 year warranty.

The comfort seat option adds air ventilation, a massage function and dynamic multicontour seat backs that have pneumatic side bolsters, thigh supports & dual lumbar support.
The AMG built supercharged 5. 4 V8 has an alloy block and heads and lightweight camshafts. It delivers 493bhp and 516 lb/ ft and is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox with AMG Speedshift that reduces gearshift times by 35%. Stopping is well covered with 8 piston front callipers and 4 piston rears.
Although it’s pronounced rear arches give it a wide and muscular look the overall proportions are less than you’d think making it manageable on smaller country roads and tight car parks. It’s dimensions are very similar to a modern Mercedes CLA or A-Class saloon!
Vehicle Condition:
The paintwork is free from all but the smallest of marks, with any chips being professionally touched in. A thorough physical inspection and paint depth test shows no signs of any panel being re-painted, corroborated by the age appropriated marks.
The cast aluminium finish is in good order throughout and the shadow chrome window surrounds show only the slightest amount of discolouration (due to traffic film remover being used when washed) There is small area of corrosion on each rear arch lip, common on early SL’s caused by stone chips but the typical issue of fading to the gloss black panels surrounding the rear score has been rectified by them being re-painted.
The car drives faultlessly, everything feels as fresh as it should for the milage and maintenance history.
The alloys have freshly refurbished wheel spokes and diamond cut rim edges, and are shod with matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres. All 4 tyres are free from damage and show no signs of perishing. The front tyres have 5mm tread depth and are dated 2012, the rears have 6mm tread depth and are dated 2014.
Inside the seats are free from bolster wear, with no damage to be found on any panels. The cast aluminium decor to the centre console and door trims is in good order, as is the Alcantara covering the instrument binnacle.
Maintenance history:
Present with the vehicle is the original book pack with all booklets. Contained within are; a fully stamped service book, owners manual, COMAND manual, LINGUATRONIC instructions, SL in brief manual, certificate of conformity and other various documents.
All routine engine service works and additional maintenance has been fully documented with 8 stamps in the service book and a file of invoices. An average mileage of 3, 833 has been covered between services, the most being 8893 miles and the least being 1288 miles.
Invoices since 2015 and within the last 6500 miles total £7500 and cover regular maintenance such as a gearbox service and replacing discs & pads along with rectifying common issues with this era of SL such as replacement ABC suspension shocks and swivels and TPMS sensors.
In 2009 Mercedes-Benz stripped and re-sealed the roof at a cot of £1, 250, these updated seals are still working as intended and 2 years ago all contacts were checked and cleaned along with clearing of the drain holes. I have checked the roof operation performing with diagnostics and performing 10 cycles and ensuring it is watertight, on her subject I was pleasing surprised at it’s speed and smoothness of operation (15 seconds ish!)
The central locking vacuum pump was recently replaced at a cost of £1200.
The vehicle will have a mechanical inspection along with an MOT test. Although I have checked, during the inspection all electrical and mechanical items will be checked to ensure they are working correctly. I am happy to discuss looking into the couple of issues present with the car, they may well be common but it wouldn’t take much to make the car almost perfect. There is a slight oil leak from the gearbox, two previously un-treated stone chips that have led to small areas of corrosion under the paint and the boot struts have lost some of their strength. Also although not technically due for almost a year you may wish for a service to be carried out before taking delivery.
A 3 month to 2 year warranty is available provided by Warrantywise’s classic car cover, please ask for more information if of interest.
