Description
History:
‘The Ford Escort XR3i is not for sensitive dynamic drivers. The chassis is firm, the engine a rough journeyman. Its rarity and uncomplicated character make the Cologne car attractive today’ - this is how Autobild describes the reliable Ford. ‘As an XR3i, the Ford Escort is pretty wild’ - writes Auto Bild Klassik. This example was first registered in Switzerland in 1989 and remained in the same ownership for many years. With less than 50, 000 km on the clock, it successfully celebrated its entry into the world of veteran vehicles on 7 September 2021 and was rewarded with the veteran seal on its vehicle registration document. The young team of restorers at Goodtimer found this special XR3i with a mileage of just 52, 000 kilometres to be in very good condition and prepared it for its new owner.
Body and paintwork:
This special edition ‘Pastel’ model was delivered in Amethyst. The paintwork is still in very good condition. The bodywork is absolutely undamaged, with no trace of rust and no damage. You can see the good care and the few kilometres.
Interior:
The interior is immaculate and as good as new. The special edition ‘Pastel’ model was optionally equipped with Recaro partial leather seats with a fine velour cover in a matching pattern. The add-on parts and the dashboard are as good as new. Only the grip marks on the door handle panelling currently detract from the as-new overall appearance. The panelling will be replaced for the buyer.
Engine and mechanics:
An uncomplicated 1600cc injection engine with 105 hp provides sufficient thrust and is also powerful when fully loaded. The clutch and the 5-speed gearbox work perfectly. The additional instruments for oil pressure and temperature may look sporty, but they are not original and are not connected.
Chassis:
The brake system and chassis also prove on the test bench that this convertible is thoroughly sound. The drop centre rims with the star in body colour are fitted with as-new tyres.
Driving experience:
In 10 seconds to 100 km/ h and a top speed of just under 190 km/ h, even the little brothers of the Escort can do it today, but back then it was already very sporty. Of course, the XR3i is particularly fun to drive with the top down. The open top acts like a wind deflector, so that hairstyles remain intact.
Recommendation:
The Escort XR3i is a newcomer to the classic car scene and definitely worth an investment. This particular example in this condition and with its few kilometres will soon break the CHF 20, 000 mark and have a firm place in the classic car scene.
