Description
The Z Type was announced in 1939 but due to the outbreak of WWII early production was limited. The Morris Z was powered by a 4 cylinder, side valve 918cc engine with three speed gearbox and production ran through to 1953 when it was replaced by the new ¼ ton Van based on the Morris Minor. The largest fleet user as the G. P. O for both telephones and mail services but many were sold to individual traders like our example.
GCX 442 was supplied new to a Huddersfield paint and decorator and by 1964 it was sold and in private use. After period of no use, the Morris came into the hands of two young owners who had planned to custom modify the Van and fit a V8 engine. Thankfully they lost interest, and the Van was saved by an enthusiast who retrieved the original engine and gearbox and re-fitted them to the vehicle.
In 1984 the Morris came into the hands of the last owner who restored the Van and maintained it with no expense spared over the past 40 years. He even went to the trouble of having a period ladder rack based on the original dimensions of the mounting holes made for the Morris. Now with too many vehicles to look after, its long term last owner has finally parted with the car after many years of enjoyment. GCX 442 has attended numerous rallies most years throughout the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's, usually staying within Yorkshire and the odd drive up to the North East.
The Morris comes with a well-documented history file to include MOT certificates to show the Morris has covered over 10, 000 miles since its restoration. A handbook and host of receipts for more recent maintenance are also with the van. In 2018 the engine was stripped, rebored and fitted with new pistons, main and big end bearings. The crankshaft was re-ground and polished, the head refaced valve guides and re-cut valves and seats fitted, and all gaskets replaced. Invoices are also on file for re-commissioning brakes and suspension and various work to the cooling and fuel systems. Over the past few years the Van has had very little use so we will be carrying out some light re-commissioning to the brakes and carrying out a major service. This is a rare opportunity, with just one owner for over 40 years, this charming, honest and very usable Van is a lovely piece of motoring history.
