This regal 1936 Alvis Silver Crest 17hp convertible is a particular rarity, as it is a pre-production car that’s believed to have been a Scottish Motor Show display car. Described as being in ‘good’ condition throughout, it was fully restored 10 years ago by an Alvis marque specialist. The vendor says work including a full engine rebuild and bodywork repainted and rechromed by renowned Alvis specialist Colin Newby. A UK-registered car, this Silver Crest has engine number 14243 and chassis number 13778. It was first registered in November 1936.

Being a pre-production car, ‘SN7595’ has a 2, 192cc engine also used in the earlier Alvis Silver Eagle. It has a four-speed Alvis gearbox with full synchromesh, while a heater and 12v socket hidden under the dashboard make it ideal for long-distance touring. The vendor adds there’s a “stack of paperwork with the car,” which has an odometer reading 70, 000 miles.

The Alvis Silver Crest was designed by the renowned George Lanchester. It was a four- or five-seat car that was created to provide high-speed touring at speeds of more than 80mph. Production cars used either a 2. 4-litre or 2. 8-litre straight-six engine, with a four-bearing crankshaft and vibration damper to boost refinement. Triple SU carburettors helped deliver the promised performance. The Silver Crest was sold both fully built and as a rolling chassis for bespoke bodywork. It was made between 1937 and 1940, with WW2 bring a halt to production.
