Description

The JDH is the sought-after two year only ('28 and '29) i. o. e two-cam Harley-Davidson two-wheeled hot-rod of the 1920s. Few bikes of that era can match it. It's impressive, feels too strong to be a ’20s bike - solid, dependable and fast. The JDH pulls so strong to 85mph but still perfect at low speeds. Starts easily and does everything well and comfortably.

Engine, gearbox and all else were fully restored in 2004 and since ridden to current days though not frequently, probably about 6000 miles, as riding miles shared with other classics. I’m reducing down due to my advancing age.

As suggested by the startling colours, it’s not entirely original, it’s modestly modified to make more suitable for modern road use. For safety, it has H-D 19” wired-on rims with new spokes and nipples, and the front brake is modified (it works rather well!).

The electrics are regulated 12volt from converted stock generator. Stock headlamp (with quartz halogen bulb) plus period spotlight. You really can light-up the road ahead, and the raucous electric Klaxon lets them know you’re coming! The rear-light is not standard, it’s larger with a brake-light and with high illumination for greater visibility. The photos show an ammeter temporarily installed on handlebar to confirm generator output before sale of the bike.

A later seat is fitted for improved comfort. The tanks are quality modern reproduction as the originals were ‘too far gone’ for dependable restoration. The exhaust was made to suit and has side outlet, so its note is well controlled.

The frame is the lighter 1926 type, still plenty strong but not beefed-up like the ’28 and later frames which were designed to take the stress of heavy sidecars and sidevans.

The fenders and rear carrier are original. The front fender valances (currently not fitted) are stored. Other than the frame year, putting back to stock, if that’s your preference, would not be difficult. However, as it stands it’s a completely up and running and well proved Harley that you can ride from Day 1.

This gives you a good overview. Fullest details, many photos, videos and notes of the restoration are available. I bought this as a restoration project in 2001 in eager anticipation of experiencing a 20's performance Harley that can be safely enjoyed in modern traffic. It has delivered brilliantly and I have delighted in 20 years of performance vintage riding!
