Suzuki Cara: A rare gem in our collection

We are excited to add a true collector's item to our collection: the iconic Suzuki Cara. This car is not just any Kei car; it is a unique and rare model that attracts the attention of car enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Only a few hundred were ever produced, making this Suzuki Cara not only a rare sight but also a Japanese classic with a rich history. Its compact size and striking design make this Kei car particularly appealing, but it is especially the unique features and the story behind this car that make it so special. In total, 533 Suzuki Caras were made.

The history of Kei cars and the birth of the Suzuki Cara

Kei cars emerged in Japan as a response to the growing demand for compact, affordable, and efficient vehicles. This class of vehicles was introduced in the 1950s to provide Japanese people with an economical and space-saving option. Suzuki was a pioneer in this segment, launching the very first Kei car in 1955: the Suzuki Suzulight. This small model laid the foundation for a long line of charming Kei cars that would capture the hearts of Japan.

In 1992, Suzuki entered into a partnership with Mazda, leading to the launch of the Autozam AZ-1. The Suzuki Cara was developed based on this collaboration and released in 1993, aiming to offer a sporty, compact car that excelled both in the city and the countryside. Although the production of the Cara was short-lived and limited, it became famous among car enthusiasts for its sporty design and gullwing doors, which were exceptional for a Kei car.

A unique piece of history on Dutch soil

Our Suzuki Cara has a special story. This specific example was brought to the Netherlands in 2002 by a Japanese car enthusiast, where it was cherished for over 22 years. When the owner, along with his son (who had just obtained his driver's license), drove to our showroom in Katwijk to sell the car, we immediately recognized the model from earlier times. Although it is a Suzuki Cara, it strongly resembles the Mazda Autozam seen in the famous game Gran Turismo 5. It was love at first sight, and the decision to purchase this Japanese classic was quickly made.

What makes this model even more special is the extensive documentation that comes with it. The car was originally produced on June 20, 1994, and all the documents collected over the years are neatly organized in a folder. It is like a small library about the Cara and Kei cars from the 1990s, adding a valuable piece of history to this vehicle.

Specifications of a '90s Kei car

The Suzuki Cara embodies everything that makes a '90s Kei car special. It features a powerful 660cc engine that meets the strict requirements for this type of vehicle: small, light, and surprisingly peppy. Kei cars from this era could not exceed 3. 4 meters in length, and weight was strictly limited to optimize fuel consumption and performance. These compact specifications make the Cara a nimble and practical city car, but its striking design and sporty character also make it appealing to true car enthusiasts.

Gullwing doors and more: The highlights of the Suzuki Cara

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Suzuki Cara is its gullwing doors. They are absolutely unnecessary for a Kei car, but they make this vehicle a true eye-catcher. When the doors open, you almost feel like you are stepping into a futuristic sports car, which makes this Cara one of the most authentic Kei cars available. The gullwing doors are a nod to the sporty ambitions of this model and give the Cara a look that is unmatched by any other Kei car from the '90s.

Additionally, this Cara is in exceptionally good condition. It has an extremely low mileage and has been meticulously maintained. The original trunk lid and steering wheel are still present, and the Autozam spoiler at the rear adds a subtle, sporty touch to the car. With its original elements and perfect condition, this Cara is not only a piece of Japanese history but also ready for a new owner who can appreciate its value.

we take pride in our extensive collection of JDM and Kei cars. As enthusiasts of Japanese cars and classic models, we strive to offer a diverse and unique selection.
