Offered for sale is my 1990 Ford Escort Eclipse 1. 3, affectionately known as Bonnie
Started its life in Guernsey and was registered in the UK in 1991, 3 owners with 88K from new and a long MOT which expires September 2025. I have had it for 3 years and covered 8K of those myself and it has been a brilliant car, fun to drive and reliable. Oil and filter change every 6 months (changed again recently) air filter and plugs every 12 months. It’s had front pads, track control arm (all nuts and bolts replaced too) exhaust rubbers, reverse light switch, carb removed and cleaned, new battery and rear shoes. I have always used genuine parts where possible regardless of cost and Castrol GTX oil.
It runs and drives well, brakes are good, goes through the gears well, gets up to temp and does not overheat, fan kicks in etc. It does have an idle problem, occasionally in traffic the revs will drop and it sometimes cuts out unless you tap the accelerator to increase them. It’s done it for years but never bothered me or the previous owner. Despite this I have every confidence in the car and would drive it anywhere!
It is cosmetically challenged, poor paintwork but the paint on these cars when new was shocking and I have been told some of them were resprayed when only a few years old! In 2013 it was written off as somebody went into the door/ wing and the insurance company wouldn’t repair it, the then owner hammered the dent out and continued using it. It has rust in various areas, mostly surface (tailgate is holed as water was getting in through spoiler fixings) arches and sills in good order. 4 good tyres, XR3i wheel trims, working spot lamps!
Interior is in good, clean condition. No rips or tears in the seats or carpets, small nick in the passenger door card and rip in the driver’s door card plus some scratches to the dash but nothing major and still very presentable. Aftermarket radio with aux (it has a great sound system!) All switches, knobs and dials work, central locking works, electric windows work, tilt and slide sunroof opens but is stiff and the blower motor temperamental.
Bonnie is 34 years old and has lived a life, not the prettiest but survived to tell the tale and that is what I love. Perfect for somebody who wants something reliable, easy to maintain and retro but isn’t fussed about aesthetics. Use it as is or give it some tlc, it is still in regular use.
