The BMW 318is is equipped with the M42 engine block, which has benefited from the four valves per cylinder technology successfully tested on the M1 since 1978, a technology that later made the M5 e28 and M3 e30 very happy. Its optimised suspension and 4-disc brakes make a big difference to the standard 318s.
