Although the name "Indy" recalls Maserati's two victories at the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940, the Maserati Indy 4. 9L is a luxurious, high-performance 2+2 GT.
Its competitors were the Ferrari 365GT 2+2, the Lamborghini Espada and the Aston Martin DBS V8. With a claimed performance of 320 bhp, 481 Nm of torque, 6. 2 seconds from 0-100 km/ h and a top speed of 270 km/ h, the Maserati Indy 4. 9 L rivalled the Lamborghini Espada and outperformed the Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 and the Aston Martin DBS V8. Its list price of 145, 000 FF (Francs) reflected its advantageous attributes and positioning. While the Aston Marin was priced at the same level, the Lamborghini and Ferrari were priced at 120, 000 FF. 1, 104 examples were produced, including 300 with the very powerful and torquey 4. 9-litre engine. By way of comparison, 787 were produced of the Aston Martin DBS V8, 801 of the Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 and 1, 227 of the Lamborghini Espada.
In addition to the Ghibli SS engine, the Indy 4. 9 L featured extremely powerful braking with large-diameter ventilated discs (300 mm front and 270 mm rear) at all four wheels, which was advanced for its time, as was the five-speed ZF manual gearbox.
Its Italian elegance, its ambient luxury, the real 4 seats, a voluminous trunk complete its panoply of car ideal for long comfortable journeys at high speed. The Maserati Indy 4, 9 L is one of the rare cars of the period 60-70 usable daily in our contemporary traffic conditions. The example offered for sale is a version 4, 9 L of 01/ 01/ 1975. The current owner has commissioned a long and meticulous restoration at a cost exceeding 100K Euros.
