The Appeal
Mass motoring began with this car. Today, the Spartan Model T is as much a coveted classic car as it is an important historical find.
Built in 1923, this Model T reminds us how simple and full of personality these innovative cars were. Presented in its classic black colour scheme after being restored a few years ago in Italy - the restorer even affixed a plaque in the engine compartment - it is in excellent condition and appears to be mostly original and true to correct factory specifications.
It is ready to be driven and to offer lots of fun. The seller has informed us that there will be no need for a formal change of ownership and that it has been awarded the ASI Gold Plate.
The History and Paperwork
- Model 1923
- Apparently spent most of its life in California
- Comes with California plates
- Restored a few years ago by Giancarlo Grosselli
- A plate in the engine compartment confirms this
- We have been informed that it is undocumented
- The seller informs us that he will not apply for a formal change of ownership
- There is a serial number on the engine but, as was normal for the time, no chassis number
- Ford only started indicating chassis numbers from 1925, after the production of this T
The Condition
- Restored in the past and still in very good condition
- Paintwork is well maintained with no obvious signs of deterioration
- Bodywork equally well maintained with panels and trim in good condition
- However, some signs of age and a rich patina are obviously present
- The chassis presents itself well and appears to have been restored
- The large canvas roof is in very good condition with black exterior and leather interior
- Wooden spoked wheels in good condition fitted with Michelin inner tube tyres
- The tyres are not the correct ones to the original specification and the seller informed us that they are 70-80 years old
- Nicely finished exterior including side sills with Ford tin sills and Ford headlights
- Interior is very well maintained with leather upholstery and unmodified dashboard
- The leather upholstery is in good condition and shows only a slight patina due to age
- Rubber floor mats with Ford logo
- It is equipped with the correct factory-fitted four-spoke steering wheel
The Mechanics
- Ford four-cylinder 2.9L (177CI) engine with 18 hp
- Three-speed planetary gearbox
- We have been informed that it runs properly with no problems to report
- Has not received recent maintenance so may require some attention
- Pre-1925 vehicles did not carry chassis numbers
- Instead, the engine carries the factory serial number
