The Appeal
1928 was a time of faltering for the classic car market. Larger saloons - which dominated the market - suddenly saw a drop in demand as the first signs of economic crisis began to loom on the horizon, and MG's pipe-smoking top bods were beginning to feel a little nervous.
Adapting numerous elements from its repertoire, MG created the M-Type (or the very first MG Midget) - and for the first time, sports car ownership felt outright accessible. The M-Type is most likely responsible for getting MG through the worldwide annus horribilis that followed, and the car quickly proved itself on both the track and the street. Indeed, the learnings from the Midget would go on to influence the next three decades of the company's developments.
As the 16th M Type ever made, this particularly cherished vehicle is likely to be the oldest MG in South Africa, and underwent a comprehensive restoration in the late 1980s. Since then, it has been little used, participating only in Triple M gatherings and various local car shows. It has been stored indoors and has been laid up since the onset of the Covid pandemic, and is now ready and waiting to return to the circuit.
It's rare that one of these comes up for sale - let alone an early example in such fine fettle.
