The Attractions

Introduced in 1932, and named after a young man from Genoa who sparked a riot by throwing a rock at an Austrian officer, the 508 Balilla was a key player in the pre-war car market in Italy, offering some of the characteristics of high-class cars in a compact, economical and practical car designed for a wider public.

It was hugely successful and became a true emblem of European mass motoring, being celebrated in popular songs and cartoons, among other things - although, it must be admitted, the very similar Fiat 509 was often depicted in its place.

This particular example, registered in September 1932, belongs to the first series with three-speed gearbox and low chassis, which makes it particularly interesting for enthusiasts and collectors.

Sold to its second and last owner after two years, it was subsequently placed under impoundment - and was kept in storage for around 30 years. It was later made operational again but never used, preserving its originality. We were told that the car probably belonged to a military barber, because of the items found inside - including a military badge, razors and goggles.

The car has some interesting features that suggest it could be a Sport Lusso variant, such as 16-inch spoke wheels, an Italian Cozette carburettor and traffic light indicators. In addition, this car is equipped with original number plates and a chronological extract of its history, testifying to its past.
