In the 1930s and 1940s, jukeboxes had become a real attraction in American service stations, motels, roadhouses and bars. The 'Mother Road' era was in full swing, and there was nothing better than stopping off at a 'diner' (a roadside restaurant) to listen to some Crosby, enjoy a great cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie.
One of the most famous manufacturers was Rock-Ola, a company founded at the end of Prohibition. Although they produced a new model every year until the outbreak of the Second World War, the financial constraints of the war effort led to the creation of their flagship model, the G1428, which became their most iconic jukebox. Its design was undeniably attractive, with 'Magic-Glo' light panels and finely moulded plastics.
These 20-selection machines were designed for 78 rpm records, but became obsolete with the arrival of 45 rpm records in the early 1950s, which required a new unit capable of offering an impressive 120 selections!
However, it is these models that are probably the most memorable and beloved of Rock-Ola. Their very extravagant design evokes a bright, oversized radio set, offering a nostalgic look back at the golden age of roadside attractions.
Condition
We understand that this G1428 is in excellent condition after a full restoration, and from an aesthetic point of view it appears to be in very good condition. We didn't spot any broken plastics, and the main switches on the rear are present and functional. The unit has been emptied of records and is ready to receive a new collection of 78s.
Inside, there is some dust, but we found no missing parts apart from the record collection. There are a few light marks on the lower parts of the cabinet, but these are not really a nuisance on such a bright and detailed unit.
For those interested, the song titles are largely filled with tracks by Bing and Bob Crosby - a classic!
