The Appeal
Following six years of producing tanks, aircraft engines and armoured cars for the war effort, MG announced their new TC model in October 1945 just five weeks after the official end of the conflict.
The post-war sports car market was tough. Sheet steel was in very short supply and most British people lacked the disposable income to make such a frivolous purchase. Nevertheless, the TC was an enormous success - largely thanks to the export market. American GIs had discovered the joys of MG sports cars during the war, so the TC proved especially popular stateside in Peacetime.
This 1949 example is one of the last from a total of 10,001 MG TCs built. Supplied new to the UK in right-hand drive, it looks like time has been kind to this plucky little roadster as it survives in fantastic overall condition. The black and red colour scheme is most fitting of the period and the car retains an age-appropriate ‘dateless’ registration number. A full set of wet weather gear is included, as is a current V5C document and collection of invoices.
The History and Paperwork
A previous keeper was clearly an active member of the MG Octagon Car Club as there are badges, stickers and various documents relating to the group
The V5C indicates one former keeper although this data is often inaccurate for vehicles of this age
32,267 miles displayed on the odometer
Numerous invoices for parts sourced through the MG Octagon Car Club
Invoice for rear suspension components dated April 2017
Invoice for a distributor rebuild dated August 2023
Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
The Condition
Black and red two-tone scheme used inside and out
The bodywork looks immensely straight and the sage lines remain crisp
The car sits of painted wire wheels with chrome “knock-on/off” spinners
The brightwork appears in very good condition for its age, as does the paint
Equipped with electric windscreen wipers
The black folding hood, side screens and tonneau all present well with minimal signs of wear
The flexible windows do not appear heavily clouded or split in any way
The vendor demonstrates that the hood folds neatly and is taught in its raised position
Badge bar fitted which also mounts a fog lamp and electric horn
Inside, the upholstery has accrued a moderate patina
There doesn’t appear to be any excessive wear to report
The wooden dashboard presents superbly, as do the instruments, switches and controls it houses
Smart black carpeting with no obvious signs of heavy wear
Sprung Bluemel’s Brooklands steering wheel
The Mechanics
1,250 cc pushrod OHV inline-four fed by twin SU carburettors
Four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on second, third and fourth
Very presentable and original-looking engine compartment
With c.54 bhp, this was a quick car in its day
We understand that this example performs well and we’re not informed of any known issues
The various accompanying invoices attest to a great deal of maintenance
