The Appeal

No matter how old they are, cars were built to be driven. So, while there’s a time and place for 100-point restored classics strewn across Concours lawns, cars that are used as their manufacturers originally intended are the ones that really pique our interest.
This 1955 Triumph TR2 is exactly the sort of car we’re talking about. Following a body-off restoration and engine rebuild, its owner drove it almost daily, covering thousands of miles all over the UK and abroad, including a big trip covering much of France. It’s therefore accrued a charming patina throughout, making this a highly usable example of what is one of the most capable sports cars of its era. The vendor comments how the Triumph easily keeps pace with modern traffic and has proved reliable during their long custodianship.
Over the past year, the TR2 has sadly been confined to the garage, so the vendor has decided to find it a new keeper who will hopefully resume driving this car as often as possible.

The History and Paperwork

  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Accompanied by a photographic record documenting the restoration process
  • V5C present
  • In present ownership for around fifteen years during which time the car was restored

The Condition

  • During the restoration, numerous components were replaced with new items
  • Leather seats in red
  • Wilton carpets in blue
  • Triumph branded cases stowed in the luggage compartment
  • The paintwork has dulled and cracked slightly in places although this does not appear excessive
  • The underside presents very well indeed with no obvious corrosion issues
  • Minimal signs of bodywork corrosion besides a few isolated areas
  • Very smart red wire wheels
  • As the car has been garage-stored, it’s very well-preserved overall
  • No hood present, although these are easily attainable and not especially expensive
  • The hood frames are in place and in fair order
  • Minimal wear evident to the upholstery

The Mechanics

  • 1,991 cc four-cylinder engine
  • Twin SU carburettors with trumpets fitted
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive
  • Electric cooling fan fitted
  • Le Mans drum brakes
  • The engine was rebuilt during the restoration
  • While the car has been confined to the garage during recent months, the vendor has found it started easily and runs very well indeed
